Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 DC DN Review: Simple & Compact

[Music] Hey it's DAV Evelyn from the camera Store today we're taking a look at the Sigma 10 to 18mm f2.8 lens this is their Contemporary version for the Sony [Music] Emote this is a new wide angle zoom lens From Sigma and it's very petite it's 255 G it has a 67 mm filter thread and if You're shooting one of the Sony crop Sensor bodies it doesn't really add a Whole lot of weight to the whole package Which makes it really convenient when You're walking around and want to shoot These big wide landscape shots or some Sort of architecture shots or in my case Some skateboarding yeah now it's a more Affordable price point than we' see in Some equivalents from Sony directly you Know it's f2.8 so it still is allowing a Lot of light through it but are there Any sacrifices with this lens let's get Into that well first let's talk about Sort of the design of this lens itself Now it's very small of course as we Mentioned but on the front of the lens We do have our Zoom ring which is very Easy to work With smooth not very big big range I Like that it kind of jets out a little Bit it's really easy to kind of feel if You're if you're not looking at your Lens and yeah the smoothness of it it Feels very high quality yeah then behind

That we do have our focusing ring but That's it that's all you have on this Lens there's no switches to manual focus Autofocus switch anything like that it's A very simple lens so all the controls Are basically through the camera yeah Interestingly enough it also comes with This new hood and so it's kind of more Like a pushon design a little bit Different a little bit more prone to Popping off if you're not careful I'm Finding I'm talking to people it's Polarizing people on it some people want The more positive click other people are Okay with it just pushing on say that's New that's Innovative try that I tend to Be awkward and I find sometimes it's a Little like awkward putting on certain Hoods and this one I found really easy To just click on so now typically when It comes to designing lenses wide- angle Lenses are the toughest to manufacture There's so many things they have to Worry about to try to make it Perfect Image like nice straight lines Everything like that so inside this tiny Little lens there's actually 13 elements In 10 different groups including four Aspherical elements which are there to Really prevent Distortion yeah you're Pretty impressed by that t a lot going On in this small little package here I'll also add that it has a seven bladed Apture ring it's not like a nine blade

Adapture 11 blade adapture we're getting Like those perfectly circular boka and You know with the sun Stars they're not Perfect they're not necessarily like the Most defined Sun stars but in are Examples I thought they look pretty good Yeah I mean it certainly added to a few Of the photos I took here and it's kind Of nice to see and have that ability to Work with some sunstars but they're just Not as defined as the much higher end Lenses with more apture blades yeah We're also see a little bit of ghosting With this lens but Sigma does such a Great job with their Coatings that I'm Finding that the images still look nice And contrasty and I think you know for The crop sensor cameras this is again a Very good pairing in terms of the Performance of this lens it's keeping up With Sony's autofocus system just fine I Mean this is a wideangle lens there's a Lot of depth of field to work with so it Doesn't have to work that hard but it is A nice pairing in that regard and I also Have to mention that I was impressed With the macro capability of this lens You get up to like 4 cm and when you're Shooting on the Ted Mill Side it's Working really well so this adds to the Versatility of this lens now the Autofocus Motors are very quiet which Really nice if you're shooting video and There's a little bit of focus breathing

Though so if you're going to be pulling Focus you do need to take that into Account now overall what do we have to Talk about when it comes to the image Quality with this lens and what I'm Finding is that it's it's pretty crisp It's pretty good but it's not crisp and Sharp as we see with some other highend Lenses but it's part to do with the Sensor size and everything else but I do Find the image quality is pretty good Out of it if you take a look at a couple Of these shots here and you zoom in you Can see the details pretty good out of It but I think I've seen crispier shots But maybe I'm just spoiled you're Spoiled yeah I think I think it does Well for a crop sensor lens overall Dave I think this is a nice contemporary Option from Sigma it does work well with Sony e-mount crop sensor cameras and I Like that it's nice and compact it Provides good value and it's a nice Versatility for a wide-angle Zoom I love That macro capability it's a nice smooth Zoom lens I think I I really like it What do you think I think people buy This lens I said I want a wider angle Lens but then they realize yeah I can Shoot much closer up in the macro but Also we don't uh talk about you know It's an f2.8 lens so the other options With Sony are an F4 lens so be more Light Gathering ability in a smaller

Lighter weight package and a very cool Innovative lens Hood design yeah and of Course that's going to be up for debate If people like that it's definitely Convenient it's easy to use and again I Really like the feeling of the lens I Like having that Zoom ring protrude a Little bit it's very simple it's that Contemporary style and we're but of Course we want to know what do you think About this contemporary offering from Sigma is it something that you consider For Sony e-mount Fujifilm X Mount or L Mount let us know in the comments below And what do you guys think of this Hood Design do you like the popon convenience Of it follow us both on Instagram and if You're new to our Channel Please Subscribe hit the notification Bell and We'll catch you again very [Music] Soon hey thanks for watching this 108 Sigma review if you want to check out More of our recent episodes click up Here and if you are Canadian you want to Shop local check out the camera Store.com down Here and
