Sigma 50mm f/1.2 DG DN ‘Art’ lens reviews

Hi it's me today I'm checking out a Brand new lens from Sigma their 50 mm F1.2 DG DN art for L Mount and Sony E-mount cameras it's a full-frame lens Which will cost £1,300 here in the UK that's a lot of Money of course but if you want that Magical f1.2 then this lens is actually Priced very competitively I'd like to Thank Sigma UK for loaning me this lens For a week for testing although as usual This is a totally independent review and If you do Splash out for this thing on Your Sony or l-mount camera one thing is For sure you'll get a load of use out of It 50 mm is a very versatile focal Length giving you a nice little emphasis On your subject while still being just About wide enough to capture a bit of The bigger picture and f1.2 is an Extremely bright aperture about 30% Brighter again than f1.4 offering you Faster shutter speed and more deeply Outof focused backgrounds and a complex Optical formula of 17 glass elements Including a floating Focus system for Better close-up image quality bodess Well for the image quality of this new Sigma lens it's less expensive f1.4 Brother certainly performed well enough Well let's take a look at this 50 mm Lens's build quality first although it's More compact than other 50 mm f1.2 Lenses it's still a little on a big side

Although its body feels gorgeous very Solid smooth and tightly assembled a Mixture of metal and heavyduty plastic It weighs 745 G just over 1 and2 so it's Also a little on a weighty side the lens Is advertised as being quite well Weather sealed and it does indeed have a Slight weather sealing gasket on the Rear mount there are a lot of control Points on the lens also which is always Handy it saves you having to fiddle Around changing things in the camera's Options menu first comes the aperture Ring which can be set to click nice and Confidently every third of an f-stop or It can be set to turn smoothly which Yields some lovely smooth aperture Changes when video making it can also be Locked in or out of automatic mode which Is a feature I often find really useful We also get a manual focus switch and a Focus hold button on the side then comes A very large rubberized manual focus Ring which turns very smoothly and just A little heavily as you can see here the Lens exhibits some Focus breathing Zooming in a bit as you focus more Closely but this is actually a better Than average performance now let's see About the autofocus motor it works Accurately and silen here in single shot Autofocus mode it's just averagely fast But switch over to continuous autofocus Mode and it's fantastically quick and

Has no problems at all tracking subject Very impressive for an f1.2 lens it Comes with a nice Sigma carry case and a Very good quality lockable plastic Hood With a rubber trim on the inner Edge it Has a 72 mm filter thread size and does Not feature image stabilization overall This is definitely a lens with a bit of A size and weight to it but the Wonderful build quality and excellent Auto focus make it really stand out the Lens is really enjoyable to Handle okay let's take a look at image Quality we'll start by testing it on a Fullframe camera my 42 megapix Sony a7r 3 in camera Corrections are turned on For this test in the middle of the image Right away at f1.2 we see absolute razor Sharpness and excellent contrast can't Really see any color fringing on Contrasting edges here either let's take A look in the image Corners they look Fantastically sharp also with great Contrast although we are also seeing a Little dark Ness even with those in Camera Corrections stop down to F2 for More brightness and excellent contrast Again in those Corners the lens stays Dis sharp down to f11 where a touch of Softness is emerging due to defraction And F16 looks a little softer again Overall though it's a brilliant Performance here on full frame 50 mm Lenses really don't come much sharper

Than this well let's see how the lens Performs on a 24 map apsc camera now at F1.2 image quality in the middle is very Good but we do see just a touch of Ghosting on contrasting edges the corner Image quality is a little softer again Stop down just to f1.4 though and the Corners look the same but the middle of The image now looks almost perfect at f2 The middle is razor sharp and the Corners also pick up more sharpness and Contrast and stop down to f2.8 for them Finally to look perfect the lens tastes To Sharp down to f8 f11 and F16 see Softness creeping in due to defraction So that's a very good performance on Apsc 2 although you need to stop down to F2 for the punchiest looking images okay Let's turn off in camera Corrections now And see about vignetting and Distortion Without Corrections the lens projects a Little p cushion Distortion but it's Mostly confined to the edges at f1.2 Vignetting is very strong though here's F1 .4 F2 and f2.8 where those Corners Properly brighten up so you'll Definitely want to use at least Corner Shading compensation with this lens the Lens's minimum Focus distance is about 40 cm a little better than average for 50 mm optic some further good news is That close-up image quality is far Better than average for a fast 50 here We are still seeing very good sharpness

And contrast at f1.2 and almost no color Finging so that's a nice and improvement Over other 50 mm f1.2 and f1.4 lenses It's just a little better than Sony's More expensive G Master competing lens Anyway just stop down to f1.4 and the Lens becomes razor sharp when shooting Close up so that really is an excellent Performance let's see how the lens works Against Bright Lights now it's a good Performance here too a gentle area of Flaring is just about visible at certain Points but this is certainly better than Average for a 50 mm optic and better Also than the Sigma 50 mm 1.4 and the Sony f1.2 G Master while we're working In the dark let's take a look at coma Levels it's good news here too no real Smearing on bright light is visible even At f1.2 let's reposition the camera now And look for sunstars they start to Emerge at f5.6 here they are at f8 and F11 and at F16 they get really quite Strong so that's a nice little bonus Also next let's look at the quality of This lens's bcka aside from the usual Catti shape to bcka balls in the corners At f1.2 there are no problems here at All Baka looks consistently lovely and Smooth without any apparent problems and Finally related to boka let's see about Longitudinal chromatic aberration at F1.2 it's visible here on bcka Highlights but again slightly lower than

Average here's f1.4 at f2 it's still There but at f2.8 it's virtually gone Overall well if sigma's intention had Been to annoy Sony by releasing a lens To compete with their own 50mm f1.2 G Master while being just as high quality If not better but way less expensive Than mission accomplished because this Is actually one of the best performing 50 mm lenses I have ever encountered Offering incredibly good image quality Even at F 1.2 with no real Optical Problems at all apart from some rather Heavy vignetting if I had to choose Between this and the sigma DG DN 1.4 Then I'd probably go for the 1.4 simply Because to my mind it represents better Value for money after all f1.2 is only About 30% brighter than f1.4 it's not a Big difference but that's not to say This f1.2 lens is bad value in any way It's way less than the official Sony Equivalent or indeed nickon or Cannon's Similar lenses and its image quality is As good if not better so if f1.2 is what You really need then of course this Thing comes highly [Music] Recommended have you ever thought to Yourself boy Chris just doesn't create Enough content for me or ever wondered If you can support this channel in a Work that I do or even thought both of Those things well the answer is in the
