[Music] Foreign [Music] Store today we're talking about the like Of vario elmar SL 100 to 405 to 6.3 lens [Music] This is it this is the like of vario LMR 100 to 400 5 to 6.3 lens now if you're Running the Panasonic or the Leica L Mount you're going to want to check out This lens it's a great focal length for Shooting Wildlife so you come down to The Calgary Zoo there's a lot to get Into with this lens so let's get into The zoo and check it out All right so I have my furry buddy Behind me here we have a Canadian Grizzly bear let's talk about focal Length with this lens so it's a 100 to 400 so what does that actually mean so On a full frame body 100 bring things in Twice as close as a human eye and a 400 Millimeter brings things in eight times Closer so this makes it a very good Option when it comes to shooting Wildlife you can see the distance that We're looking at here with this bear and You can see the shots that I'm taking With it now with this lens it is quite Versatile we do have the ability to Shoot nice portraits good head and Shoulder shots with that 100 millimeter Side of things but it's really designed For shooting that longer length that's
What I'm really wanting to buy this lens For I want to bring animals and some Sports and smash so much closer to me That's where the one to 400 really fits Into a nice focal length now when I First get my hands on a lens it's really Nice to sort of get a feel for what the Lens is all about and I have to admit Leica makes some very sexy Optics I mean Not just internally what you'll talk About in a minute here but the outside Of this lens is very Sleek very minimal Controls so much so that there's no Extra buttons or controls on the lens Except for the focus and the zoom ring So the lens itself is very minimal I do Have a really nice nice big ring here For doing my manual focus if I choose to Do that but the zooming which I'm using A lot today is great because it only has About a 90 degree throw from 100 to 400 So that makes it very easy and Convenient if you want to reframe my Shot from sort of wide to narrow with This one to 400. now the other thing That looks really impressive and I Haven't seen on a lot of other cameras Is the way this tripod socket is put in Now this tripod foot is pretty Interesting because it's very shallow Distance between that and the lens you Can't get your fingers in between it Like you can with most lenses now it's Interesting because it keeps the whole
Camera a little more low profile if I Put it onto a tripod now it is removable And it is ARCA Swiss compatible which I Really appreciate I think all lenses That have a tripod collar should make a Marker switch compatible I don't know Why some don't still I do like when I am Rotating the lens on a tripod there are Some increments every 45 degrees so I Can lock it in if I want to be a little More precise with that and it's not just Sort of at my discretion now this lens Does come in at about three pounds very Comparable with the other ones on the Market Sports an 82 millimeter filter Thread on the front and it does come Supplied with the hood which somebody Forgot today I won't name names Drew but Take a look at this b-roll and you can See what that lens looks like now Overall I am impressed with the build Quality of this lens as to be expected With the lens of this price point Especially sporting the Leica moniker Now when it comes to the Focus Performance of this lens it is acquiring Focus very quickly now what I am finding Is that at the zoo here we're not Shooting anything that's terribly Aggressive when it comes to autofocus And the camera can easily keep up with a Sleeping Bear so it's not a problem with That at all but it does acquire Focus Very quickly take a look at our wall
Test here and you can sort of see what To expect when shooting with the s52 From Panasonic which has the most Advanced autofocus system that Panasonic Has to offer in the L system with its Added phase detect now the animals at The zoo aren't moving very fast Especially the Sleeping Bear which I'm Kind of envious of what I'm finding Though is that I did take this lens to One of my daughter's rugby games where It's a much more aggressive Sport and a Much bigger test for autofocus Performance of a lens and I'm finding That I think the lens can keep up with Everything but it's the body itself Which is holding it back just a little Bit so I'm looking forward to see what Comes out next from Panasonic and Leica As regards to autofocus as they continue To improve the their system right now When it comes to the overall autofocus Performance of this lens I feel we're Just on the cusp of what this lens is Capable of doing and as the cameras and Bodies get significantly better this Lens is going to be more than able to Keep up with a focusing speed now as Much as I like the build quality of this Lens it's what's on the inside that Really is what's responsible for making The images here's we talk about the Glass now Leica doesn't skip they make Some amazing quality Optics anybody who
Shot like in the past knows what I'm Talking about so if this is your first Foray into it you're going to be Impressed now there are 22 elements in This lens and 16 different groups now we Do have a nine bladed circular aperture And all these things are designed to Give us a very pleasing image now what I Like about this lens is that wide open At F5 I'm getting some amazing quality Images edge to edge but even if I stop Things down I'm not getting any sharper It's very staying pretty much the same Take a look at our wall test here when We're shooting with a much higher Resolution s1r and you can see that the Corner sharpness is fantastic both at 100 and at 400. now the creamy Background bokeh that we're looking for Is not going to be there as much because It is a five to six point three lens However it does produce a very sort of Natural looking bokeh I do find also the Sun stars and be able to create with This lens are very natural looking but They're not as distinguished which is Okay because it's really what I'm Finding is like just trying to recreate What the human eye sees as much as Possible that really shows now the other Thing too we also have him stabilization In this lens that we can throw through The body that means on a lens of this Nature I can certainly help salvage some
Of these shots at a little more suspect Shutter speeds the other thing I'm very Impressed with this lens is the lack of Chromatic aberration the fact that it Can deal with high contrasting so well With no color shift is very impressive Overall when it comes to the image Quality of this lens I'm not Disappointed in any way shape or form It's not just overall sharpness but the Character of this lens we actually have Some character it looks more natural Than I've seen some other Optics these Days we're seeing lenses that are Becoming more and more clinical a little Less character and Leica has a very good Balance of an incredible sharpness but Good character to go with it All right we had a lot of fun shooting At the Zoo today however it was an Absolute Zoo both as far as the animals Go and the amount of people that were There today so there's no quiet spaces At all we had to step away we went to a Nice little Park not too far away from The zoo to do our conclusion here in our Last couple talking points so overall What do I think about this lens well I Really appreciate the design that like Has come up with I like that it's very Sleek it's very minimalistic with its Controls and it's a very sexy one to 400 I have to admit that I do like that the Tripod collar is actually very close to
The lens as I'm holding it cradling it When I'm using the zoom I'm not having To extend my hand out much further like Some other lenses are where that tripod Foot has a lot more space to it now I Have got my fingers caught in here once Or twice so just be careful of that when You're using it but it's the image Quality I want to talk about and that's What I'm ultimately going for when I Come to a lens like this I'm getting great quality images there's No bones about it I mean I always expect Nothing less from a Leica lens I want The best of the best and like it has Been producing fantastic optics for Years and years this lens is no Different at 100 or at 400 the image Quality is fantastic even if you stop it Down a little bit you don't really gain Any image quality it's the image Stabilization certainly helps with those Low suspect shutter speeds and the Basically void of all chromatic Aberration and what I do appreciate is That Leica has kept the price of this Lens to three thousand dollars Canadian Which is a value when it comes to the Leica world but even amongst other 100 To 400s or 100 to 500s in this category This is a pretty good value in a lens so If you've invested in the L Mount Alliance and are running L Series glass On either Panasonic or Leica camera
