Greetings again everyone and it seems Like Sony's designers have had an Interesting idea to take a fast Standard 24 to70 mm zoom lens and cut it down to Size a bit to make it more portable and A bit less expensive here is the Sony Fe 24 to 50 mm f2.8 G good idea maybe it's Good that the lens at least starts at 24 Mm a lovely wide angle and in an age of High resolution cameras if this lens is Sharp enough then at least you be able To crop into your final image to get a Bit closer to your subject okay I'm not Completely convinced here to be honest Especially as losing out on 70 mm will Greatly reduce your capacity for Portrait photography but that's just me I'm sure some users will value this Bright aperture Zoom lens's smaller size More than I do one major issue though is The lens's high price of 1,150 here in the UK which seems very Expensive I'll p a price and US dollar Down in the description below it's a Fullframe camera lens just for Sony's Mless ount cameras and I'd like to thank Sony very much for learning me this lens For a week for testing although as usual This is a totally independent review Here is that Zoom range in action not Much but it's a good start at least and A maximum aperture of f2.8 is enough for Shooting in Darker situations and Getting at least somewhat out of focused
Backgrounds in your images the land his Build quality is typically nice for a Sony G optic here it's made of high Quality Plastics with weather sealing Around the metallic Mount compared to a 24 to 70 mm f2.8 lens it's considerably Smaller and lighter the aperture ring Can be set to click or to turn smoothly Which is satisfying for both Stills and Video Shooters it can't be locked in or Out of automatic mode but the click Needed to get into a mode is at least Quite forceful then comes to rubberized Zoom ring turn smoothly not much Stickiness here which is again useful For video Work unusually the front of The lens extends when zoomed out not When zoomed in then comes the rubberized Focus ring which turns very smoothly as You can see here the lens's manual focus Response is Snappy although whether You're zoomed in or zoomed out the lens Does suffer from moderate Focus Breathing thankfully the latest Sony Cameras can correct for this nowadays as Expected from a Sony lens the autofocus Is brilliantly fast silent and accurate Whether you're shooting in single shot Mode or continuous autofocus The Lens Comes with a little plastic Hood its Filter size is 67 mm and it does not Feature image stabilization then again Not really necessary as Sony's cameras Almost all have it built in these days
Overall it's typically High build Quality here for Sony G lens everything Is present and correct and working Perfectly well So let's see about image quality firstly On a fullframe camera my a7r 3 with its 42 mapel sensor in camera Corrections Are turned on at 24 mm and f2.8 we right Away see spectacular sharpness and Contrast in the middle of the image Corner image quality is noticeably Softer and darker but still holding Together well the lens stays dis sharp Down to f5.6 where we see a bit more Brightness and contrast in fact f 8 and F11 look about the same also so good but Not perfect let's zoom into 50 mm now at F2.8 again image quality is absolutely Perfect in the middle this time Corner Image quality is virtually as good as The middle and if you stop down to F4 Then a touch of extra sharpness and Brightness is visible here the lens Stays their sharp down to F16 where the Effect of defraction cause softness over All the lens is putting in a great Performance here although just a little More Corner sharpness might have been Nice at 24 mm all right let's see how The lens performs on a 24 megap apsc Camera now again at 24 mm and f2.8 we See absolutely brilliant quality in the Middle the corners look virtually as Good now there's no real Improvement at
F4 but at f5.6 and f8 we get further Tiny little improvements defraction Begins to soften the image at f11 and F16 all right let's zoom in to 50 mm now It's the same result brilliant quality In the middle and almost as good in the Corners at F4 those Corners look even Better so it's a very slightly better Performance on an absc camera here that Classic Sweet Spot Advantage is really Kicking in and it doesn't always okay Let's turn off in camera Corrections and Take a look at Distortion and vignetting On a fullframe camera normally your Camera will correct these but if you Don't correct them then at 24 m mm the Lens suffers from massive Barrel Distortion and very dark Corners at f2.8 Stop down to F4 f5.6 and f8 to see those Corners brighten up even if you zoom Into 50 mm Barrel Distortion remains and The corners rather dark at f2.8 although They brighten at F4 so it's a poor Performance here make sure your images Are corrected one way or another let's See about close-up image quality now and If you zoom in this lens can get you Nice and close to any smaller subject at F2.8 closeup image quality is very soft At F4 we see an improvement at f5.6 and F8 though we get excellent sharpness Again okay let's see how the lens Performs against bright light for a Modern lens it's only an average
Performance here to be honest a fair Amount of flaring is visible whether You're zoomed out or zoomed in but at Least it's not too opaque while we're Working in the dark let's take a look at Coma levels and Sun stars and at 24 mm And F 2.8 there's no real coma smearing To be seen here in image Corners Everything's looking great really let's Zoom out again and look for sun Stars They begin to probably emerge at f8 at F11 and F-16 they're nice and strong Here let's take a look at the quality of This lens's bcka now outter Focus Backgrounds look fairly soft here I Couldn't notice any major issues in my Pictures except for the usual cat High Shape to specular highlights in image Corners H like on almost every other Camera lens and finally related to B Comes longitudinal chromatic aberration At f2.8 it's really strong on this lens Unfortunately it's much better at F4 Though and at f5.6 it's gone overall Well despite its very high sharpness and The fact that it's small and enjoyable To use this is the first Sony lens in a Long time which I can't quite recommend Simply because of its inappropriate Price it's simply way too expensive for The the zoom range you're getting here And although the lens is very sharp its Optics in other respects are not totally Perfect if Sony can get this things
