Brightin Star 35mm f/0.95 (APS-C) lens review

Greetings once again everyone and today The apsc cam world is blessed with a new Manual focus extreme bright aperture Lens the bright and star 35mm f0.95 it's $200 or 200 here in the UK and it'll be Available for Canon eosm neon Zed Sony E Micro 43s Fuji X and Canon RF Mount Cameras and as I mentioned it offers an Apsc image Circle not fullframe although If you do mount it onto a fullframe Mirrorless camera as you can see here it Offers surprisingly good coverage I'd Like to thank Brighton star for sending Me one of these lenses for testing Although as usual this will be a totally Independent review we'll be look at its Strength as well as its weaknesses but One weakness it won't have will be Getting beautiful looking images with Deeply autofocused backgrounds it is a Unique pleasure to shoot at f0.95 There's always something a little Magical about that number and as well as Offering fantastic background separation It means you can more easily shoot in Darker conditions the challenge here Will be in properly manually focusing The lens which will slow you down and Kind of limit you to shooting still Rather than moving subject and 35 mm on An apsc camera is a standard field of View lovely and versatile for all kinds Of Photography the lens itself is small Metallic tough and at 370 G or a bit

Under a pound it has a little weight to It it's dead simple it's all based on a Metal lens mount in a cool looking Gunmetal gray color but with no weather Ceiling then comes the manual focus ring I found it turning smoothly and just Precise enough for manually fixing at F0.95 but remember without wanting to Blow my own trumpet I've had more Practice than most people at doing this So manually focusing this thing May well Take a less experienced photographer Some getting used to as you can see here The lens suffers from significant Focus Breathing then at the top of the Lens Comes the aperture ring at wider angles It turns with nice gentle clicks at Every half and F stop of aperture However between F4 and F-16 the spacing Is seriously bunched up which is mildly Annoying if you like to work at darker Apertures unfortunately there's no lens Hood with this optic let's hope its work Against Bright Lights isn't too bad the Lens's front filter size is 52 mm and it Doesn't offer xif information or image Stabilization or anything like that Overall it's standard build quality here For an inexpensive manual focus lens Which isn't necessarily such a bad thing So let's move on and look at image Quality I'll be testing it out today on A 24 map apsc Sony mless camera in Camera Corrections are not available

With this lens at f0.95 there is some Sharpness and acceptable contrast to be Seen in the middle but we're also Struggling with ghosting on contrasting Edges along with a little magenta color Fringing and the corner image quality uh The less said about that the better stop Down to f1.4 and those Corners look the Same back in the middle we're seeing Lads more sharpness and contrast but Also some very striking magenta fringing That fringing hangs around at f2 and Even f2.8 although at F4 it's finally Gone over in the corners now we see Decent sharpness although this time There's blue and red color fringing to Be seen at f5.6 image quality in the Corners is the best it gets the lens Stays this sharp until you stop down to F-16 where defraction softens the image Overall it's not a great performance Here and the lens is particularly Susceptible to lateral chromatic Aberration however even at f0.95 there Is some sharpness to be seen in the Middle of the image let's see about Viting and Distortion now the lens Projects Barrel Distortion which is Noticeable but not strong even at f0.95 Vignetting is very low a result of the Lens's large image Circle stop down to F1.4 and the image Corners fully Brighten the lens's minimum Focus Distance is a nice 37 CM getting you

Decently close to smaller subjects quite Often less expensive f0.95 lenses see Their image quality fall apart as soon As you get even slightly close to just About anything but impressively closeup Image quality here is okay at f0.95 F1.4 looks about the same but F2 gets Pretty sharp here let's see how well the Lens works against Bright Lights now and It's a disaster as you can see with all Kinds of flaring problems stop down and They're reduced but still a serious Issue here and while we're working in The dark let's take a look at coma Levels coma smearing is rather strong on Bright points of light in the image Corners here at f0.95 there's only a Tiny reduction at f1.4 but at f2 and F2.8 it's virtually gone to be replaced By sunstars stop down to f5.6 and those Sun stars get a little stronger and Better defined but that is as big as They get next bcka backgrounds that are More deeply out of Focus look lovely and Soft here some backgrounds which are a Bit nearer can look pretty rough and Outlining though Unfortunately and related to to Baka Comes longitudinal chromatic aberration There are quite serious problems here Too at f0.95 even stop down to F2 it's Still quite a problem at f2.8 it's still There but at F4 it is finally going away Overall this is a lens with a very low

Price point and correspondingly low Image quality there's just no other way To see it however it does have better Closeup image quality than some other Inexpensive f0.95 lenses I have tested And of course it can still take some Beautiful images for you so long as You're not picky about its technical [Music] Performance all right thanks for Watching everyone and as usual a huge Thanks to all my supporters over on Patreon who have made such a difference In keeping this channel going Sponsorship free for so many years now Check it out in a description below Supporters get all kinds of extra bonus Content and I think warm and happy Thoughts about them almost every day God Bless Everyone
