Sony A7CR & Sony A7C II Initial Impressions

Hey it's June Evelyn from the camera Store and today we're talking about the Sony a7c Mark II and the Sony a7cr Well Drew Dave is on vacation right now I know and Sony sent us the new Sony A7c2 as well as the Sony a7cr both two Pretty exciting cameras very exciting And it's nice to see that they're Trickling down all the technology the New autofocus algorithms and everything From like the a7r series and a74 down Into these new smaller compact cameras Absolutely and especially from the video Side of things Drew's gonna get into That a little bit later on but we're Going to tell you our opinions about These cameras are First Impressions and Let you know what we think about these New upgrades it's not too often that we Have two exciting Sony full-frame Cameras to talk about on the same day But here we are with the Sony a7c2 which Is their 33 megapixel lower resolution Model that they're introducing as well As the also full frame a7cr which is a 61 megapixel a high resolution beast in A compact body now I'm going to talk About the handling and some of the Physical features of both these cameras Because they have a lot of similarities Look looking at this body the first Thing you can tell is that this is a Small camera it only weighs 515 grams Same with the Sony a7cr and actually all

The features I'm going to talk about Here go with both cameras so it has a Nice grip to it although I do find that My little pinky is missing its home However on the a7cr it comes with this Additional grip it gives an extra spot For my pinky to hang out I find on the A7c2 just like its predecessor it kind Of just dangles there and I I do like Having that additional little grip to it And it's a nice thing it doesn't add any Power or anything like that but it just Gives you that extra hold on the camera And I like that it has the battery door So you can easily change out your Batteries and then you still have the Quarter 20 thread on the bottom for Mounting it to a tripod so that's a Really nice feature with that camera and It comes in the Box super handy now of Course they're very compact bodies Especially for full frame cameras the A7cr in particular is the highest Resolution full frame camera in such a Compact body so I think that alone is Quite compelling for people that are Traveling or want something that has Just the high resolution full frame Sensor that they can travel with one of The things that I'm glad they did is They slightly improved the electronic Viewfinder so we have better Magnification with it it's still only 2.36 million dots but I do find the

Experience of looking through the Electronic viewfinder is definitely Improved it still has a nice refresh Rate and of course we still have the Articulating screen no big improvements Here but I do like that it's a touch Screen and of course with Sony's new and Improved menu system it does work a lot Better in terms of the overall interface In terms of controlling the camera we do Have that snq video and dedicated still Photography switch just under the psma Dial I like that we have the three Control dials as well we don't have a Joystick though to move your autofocus Points around but because we have a lot Of the autofocus features that are Sony's latest real-time tracking auto Focus technology I don't mind that too Much so we're going to get into that a Little bit later when we talk about the Processor we talk a little bit more About the performance of the camera but I do have to say that we have only one SD memory card slot this is uhs2 Compatible but if you're someone that is Looking at this camera maybe in Comparison to say the Sony A7 4 that is Something to consider the battery in Both these cameras is the npf said 100 Battery now of course this processor is A little bit more demanding on battery Power than the predecessor however we do Still have USBC charging so that's

Really handy especially again if you're Traveling you're on the go I love being Able to charge up these cameras you Using a power bank or in your car the Last thing that I want to mention on the Physical features of this is that it's Pretty and it's also dust and moisture Resistant and so not a problem on a day Like today however the sky could open up At any moment in these hot summer Conditions so it's nice to have that Reassurance that you could avoid some Issues with droplets now let's talk About that bion's XR processor this is An awesome processor for Sony and allows It to do a lot of the cool technology Improvements that we've seen with Sony In the last year it's been fantastic now I'm going to get into some of the Nitty Gritty on the a7c2 because this is where The cameras differ a little bit first of All the autofocus systems are slightly Different on this lower resolution 33 Megapixel camera that has a five axis Image stabilization system that gives You seven stops of in-body image Stabilization this has 759 phase Detection autofocus points and of course Sony's claim to fame their real-time Tracking autofocus now if you take a Look at our tests here this obviously is With a human this is with Liam who did Some awesome soccer and biking for us Today for our review and it has the

Ability and profiles to track humans it Can do birds it can do insects it can do Dogs and cats all kinds of cool stuff I Mean a lot of the cameras are now having This ability but Sony does it really Well and you can see from our examples That this is performing excellently I'm Definitely seeing a huge improvement Over the predecessor the a7c that brings Me to shooting speed now on the a7c2 we Can shoot 10 frames per second both in Their mechanical which is actually first Electronic shutter or you can shoot an Electronic at 10 frames per second that Gives you the silent ability as well but Let's talk about the high resolution one Too So on the high resolution camera we have A slightly different autofocus system we Have about 100 less autofocus points Across the sensor but we're talking About a 61 megapixel sensor and this Also has the same in-body image Stabilization it's a five axis system Giving you seven stops of in-body image Stabilization again great for doing low Light shooting as well as being able to Do Smooth video it's just really nice to Have that extra stabilization especially When you're all over the place like I Tend to be the other place where this is A little bit of a lower performer is Actually with the shooting speed you can Shoot eight frames per second in

Electronic first curtain or in full Electronic or silent you can shoot seven Frames per second so not a huge decrease From the lower resolution model I mean Personally especially shooting with a High resolution one I do not want to be Shooting more than 10 frames per second And for doing the kind of action that we Are shooting today 10 frames per second Was definitely more than adequate I was Happy with that and we got lots of Keepers All right so when it comes to video These cameras do differ so we're going To start with the a7c Mark II uh because It is supposed to be the more hybrid Option more slightly video Centric and It really does deliver on that in terms Of video we're seeing super sampled 4K 30 and it's with the full sensor readout As well and it does do 4K 60 albeit with A aps-c crop to it honestly for just the Little clips and the shooting that we've Been doing today I've had no issues with Overheating or with the record limit Thus far now something similar to the A7c is it does do 120 frames per second In 1080P and that is on their s and Q Mode or recorded internally directly Into the camera now the big changes with The one of the big changes with the a7cr Is that it does 4K 60 with the slightly Reduced crop but it doesn't do super Sampled 4K so we're getting a little bit

Limited in terms of the record formats Which makes the a7c Mark II the overall Better option for hybrid and for Content Creators and now something that is Identical between them though is the Ports so we have of course USBC charging As well as a headphone microphone Jack And of course our favorite micro HDMI Please put full size hdmis in they're so Much better but they work well for General content creation feeding a lav In listening and monitoring your audio And basic stuff like that nice sturdy Laps nice sturdy flaps as well yes Something only really content creators Or people who are shooting products are Going to notice but they stay open like It's so simple I like that Now in regards to the bion's XR Processor it's giving us a lot of really Cool functionalities like the auto Reframing which we've seen in the zve1 And a couple other cameras that makes Solo content creation vlogging things Like that so much easier and so much More Dynamic if you're a single person Shooter and this works really well with The real-time autofocus tracking we've Used it before in a few different Cameras and I'm really happy that They're continuing it with this lineup On both of the new a7cs we're also Seeing the full Suite of creative looks S-log 3 Rec 709 pretty much everything

That you would really want for any sort Of Productions or just small form Content creation And of course seven stops of in-body Stabilization I really love how they're Improving this almost every single Iteration I honestly thought five stops Of image stabilization was going to be More than enough for all of my daily Uses but we are seeing a tangible impact Especially when we're doing handheld Motion panning tilts and stuff like that Where you don't necessarily have time to Get a tripod or a monopod set up you can Kind of see it in here when I'm shooting Liam all of this is shot free hand and Having that creative control and just That ability to record things like that Without having to set things up is Really handy and the last thing it does Have USBC charging of course like Evelyn Said but even cooler for me at least is The live streaming ability for you to Just plug it in to a computer have it Recognized as a device as opposed to Using the Imaging Edge softwares and Things like that I love that it's 4K 15 Frames per second but more useful one is 1080p 60. nobody's record doing live Streaming at 4K it's all 1080p anyway so Having that built in is always nice to See Well Drew I think Sonia's done again With some pretty capable cameras but the

Question is which one is your favorite Of these two you know as much as the Video settings on this and the the extra Features are really nice I I really do Like what they're kind of doing with the A7cr the higher Ultra compact high Resolution camera and it's priced really Well in for the market so I think it Fits this like really Niche category Between the a74 and the A7 R5 yeah Absolutely and I mean it is kind of like A baby a7r5 and I think it has a lot of Very compelling features that would make Something that would be like a great Secondary camera if you wanted that high Resolution something to travel with it Does have some great video specs image Quality is awesome but I'm really liking The results that are coming out of both Of these cameras the only thing you've Got to consider is with the a7c2 because It's priced fairly similarly to the A7 IV which one are you gonna pick I mean You definitely get some advantages with The better autofocus the new technology However with a74 you still got the Dual Card slots you get a little bit better Battery life yeah it's really splitting Hairs between the a74 and the and the A7c2 so that one's a really tough one For me it was trying to figure out where This kind of sits in terms of Sony's Lineup because the sm4 wallet is you Know we call it old now but in reality

It's like what two years old so it's Still a relatively new camera with a lot Of really good features so it feels kind Of like this is butting into the Territory it is but I mean you do get The better autofocus performance a lot Of the technological features a step up In some of the video features as well And so I think what it comes down to is What is going to be the most important To you we hope that we're helping answer Some of those questions for you but of Course we want to know what do you guys Think what are your thoughts on these Two new cameras which one is the most Compelling to you how do you think it Fits into Sony's lineup let us know in The comments below follow them both on Instagram and if you're new to our Channel Please Subscribe hit the Notification Bell and we'll catch again Very soon All right Hey thanks for sticking around and Watching our first Hands-On preview with The a7c2 and the a7cr if you want to Watch more of a recent content click up Here and if you're a Canadian and you Want to shop local click on the camera Store.com down here
