Viltrox AF 27mm f/1.2 lens review

Howdy again everyone and in the world of Affordable new autofocus lenses Chinese Manufacturer Phil trox are continuing to Make a big splash with their ambitious Designs this time a new autofocus 27 Millimeter F 1.2 lens initially just for Vgx cameras although I'm sure it'll make Its way onto other systems too it comes Out in a couple of weeks time and at 550 US Dollars it's potentially great value For money especially with that extremely Bright aperture and useful moderately Wide angle field of view the full frame Equivalent of about 41 millimeter a nice Match for the perspective of the human Eye it's wide enough to capture the Bigger picture but not too white to give A little emphasis on your subject and at F 1.2 as you can see it can get Impressively out of focus backgrounds I'd like to thank Phil trox for sending Me a copy of this lens for testing Although as usual this is a totally Independent review the build quality of This lens as typical fill trucks here Metallic tough and tightly assembled and At 560 grams a bit weighty it's based on A metal lens mount where the weather Sealing gasket and a USBC port for Future firmware updates then comes the Aperture control ring which turns with Gentle clicks every third of an f-stop On my copy of the lens though there was A slight aperture issue certain

Apertures would deliver A Brighter Image Than expected perhaps that something That can be fixed with a firmware update Anyway if you're happy to occasionally Override that issue with exposure Compensation and it only happens Occasionally then it's not a problem and Maybe it's only with certain Fuji Cameras like my xt3 in front of that Comes a metallic Focus ring which turns Very smoothly although on my Fuji xt3 Camera it's manual focus response was a Little jerky Not Unusual on older Fuji Cameras as you can see here the lens Displays a moderately strong focused Breathing in which could be a bit of an Issue for video makers the lenses Autofocus motor is silent accurate and Reasonably fast as you can see here Pretty impressive to be honest The Lens Comes with a generously deep plastic Hood it has a filter thread size of 67 Millimeters and does not feature image Stabilization of all excellent build Quality here although we are missing an Auto manual focus control switch and the Option to de-click the aperture Mechanism for video makers anyway more Importantly image quality and I'll be Testing it today on my trusty Fuji xd3 With its 26 megapixel aps-e sized sensor And Camera Corrections are automatically Turned on at F 1.2 we see brilliantly Sharp image quality in the Middle with

Great contrast and over inner Corners Wow almost as good for a wider angle F 1.2 lens this is a fantastic performance Stop down to F2 for more brightness in The corners but not really any more Sharpness if you use top down all the Way to F4 then you're treated to just a Touch of extra resolution the lens stays There sharp down to f11 although F16 Gets really soft due to the effects of Diffraction still fantastic stuff Viltrox lenses have been getting sharper And sharper recently and this is Absolutely no exception to the rule it Has excellent contrast too and nice Neutral colors okay let's bypassing Camera Corrections by shooting in raw And taking a look at Distortion and Vignetting I'm happy to say that Distortion is very low on this lens but At F 1.2 unsurprisingly vignetting is Very high at f2 that darkness is pushed Into the corners and I have 2.8 and Therefore we see further improvements The lenses minimum Focus distance is a Very respectable 28 centimeters getting You nice and close to smaller subjects The other good news is that close-up Image quality is virtually as sharp as At normal distances even at F 1.2 How well does this lens work against Bright light at F 1.2 there's quite a Bit of soft subtle flaring which isn't Too bothersome in your pictures but will

Reduce contrast stop down to F2 as I do Here and it goes away so that's an Overall better performance than I was Expecting while we're working in the Dark let's take a look at coma levels And impressively well there's none of it To be seen here even at F 1.2 that's a Very pleasant surprise well done with Viltrox if you want to see any kind of Decent Sun stars then you have to stop Down to about f8 and they just get a Little stronger at f11 or F16 but They're never especially powerful next Bokeh as I mentioned at F 1.2 this lens Can give you some very out of focus Backgrounds and generally even quite Difficult backgrounds look lovely and Soft here one thing I will mention is That at F 1.2 cat's eye bockable shades Are a little stronger than usual as you Can see and finally related to bucket Comes longitudinal chromatic aberration Some blue and magenta fringing is Visible here on bokeh highlights at F 1.2 although it's not terribly strong at F2 it's greatly reduced and at F 2.8 Gone overall well not much to say here As the test results just speak for Themselves in a week or two's time for About 550 US Dollars you can own one of The best lenses ever made for the Fiji System let's hope Sony Nikon and maybe Even one day Canon versions of the lens Will hit the market soon too highly
