[Music] Foreign Hi I'm Dustin Abbott I've been eagerly Awaiting the Sony e-mount version of The Amazing viltrox Pro AF 75 millimeter F 1.2 in some ways Sony has even fewer Premium options like this for aps-c than What Fuji does I expected a port over From Fuji xmount onto Sony e-mount but This lens is even better than I expected It has some new features it has more Refined autofocus and of course it has That same amazing Optical performance That really sets this lens apart and Makes it an amazing value at a price Point of 550 dollars so should you buy One well you can get my complete Thoughts right after a word from our Sponsor Today's episode is brought to you by Phantom wallet the minimalist modern Wallet that is now even better with the New Phantom X that is crafted from Aluminum right here in Canada it is 22 Percent smaller and 35 percent lighter While still making it easy to access Your cards and money when you need them Thanks to their unique Fanning mechanism You could even customize your wallet due To its modular design with accessories Like a money clip cash holder ID display And even chipolo and air tag tracking Integration visit Store.phantomwallet.com to check out

Their unique sizes Styles and finishes That span from aluminum to Wood to Carbon fiber and use code Dustin 15 for 15 off when you're ready to check out So as noted there are some new and Improved features on the Sony e-mount Version that starts with more options When it comes to the control of the Aperture we now have the ability to De-click the aperture and so you can Either use it with it clicked in one Third stop to tense or you can d-click That aperture and you can smoothly rack Through the various aperture options for Aperture racking it gives you more Control over that it makes the lens a Little bit more useful for video Production aperture has 11 blades and it Remains beautifully circular even as you Stop The Lens down as you can see here Also added on is now a focus hold button Which has become pretty much a Sony Standard feature and so it is included Here on the Sony e-mount version which Of course it can be programmed to Various functions there we continue to Have the afmf button or switch which I'm Always very glad to have and so we have A more feature-rich lens here we also Continue to have a thorough weather Ceiling with a total of nine seal points Throughout the lens but now we have what Is a more distinctive and stylish rear Gasket which is kind of the orangey red

Color that viltrox employed on the 16 Millimeter F 1.8 and I really like this Because it gives the lens a distinct Flavor that is uniquely viltrox I love For example the fact that Zeiss used to Use a blue gasket there that in a kind Of a Zeiss blue color that set their Lenses apart from everyone else it's Great to see viltrox getting their own Sense of style here which I really Appreciate the focus ring itself is all In metal but what has really improved is That it is more refined in the actual Focus action before I could see some Visible steps I don't see that here on The e-mount version and this of course Makes for a more quality manual focus Experience Now what hasn't changed is that this Lens remains big it is not a small lens For an aps-c lens in fact you can see Here that they're older 56 millimeter F 1.4 is dwarfed by the 75 millimeter F 1.2 and either x-mount or Sony email This lens is 87 millimeters in diameter That's 3.42 inches and it's 101 Millimeters or four inches in length Giving you a large but common 77 Millimeter filter thread up front It it also weighs in a little bit Heavier in the e-mount version at 675 Versus 670 grams that's 23.8 ounces and So this lens obviously is going to Balance better the larger the body you

Have I've actually tested it in the Aps-c mode on my Sony a7r Mark V which Gives you 26 megapixels of resolution so It makes really for probably the best Aps-c experience out there outside of The newly announced uh a6700 but the Fact that this is a larger full-frame Body actually works really well for the Viltrox lens as it's a more natural fit Here it's really more of a full frame Lens in terms of size and that's Probably the primary negative that Anybody is going to take away but as We're going to see in a moment I would Say that the optical performance Probably justifies the size Another feature that viltrox has had for A long time but continues to employ here That's very welcome is a USBC port on The lens mount that allows you to do Firmware updates right there to the lens It's a great approach throughout this Lens you see some of the other reasons For the size and the weight and that the Materials are all really nice scale here Everything is in metals outside of the Lens Hood which is the only plastic Thing here you look inside there is a Lot of glass there one thing that Viltrox has historically not done well That unfortunately continues to be the Case as it was with the Fuji version of This lens and that is that the minimum Focus distance is a pretty low 88

Centimeters and that gives you only a 0.10 times maximum magnification so That's one area that I would still like To see improve from viltrox but frankly It's hard to complain too much when they Are doing so much so well at this point Now as noted in my introduction I did Find autofocus performance much better In the Sony e-mount version now I will Say this since the time that I reviewed The xmount version they have had some Firmware updates and it focuses better Than it used to but the bottom line is That Fuji autofocus is just not as good As Sony autofocus and so whether it's The lens or the camera or some Combination of the two I got much better Autofocus results here on the Sony Platform I found that I was able to just just Grab shots of birds in flight without Even having initially acquired them just Jumping on grabbing focus and even at F 1.2 I was astonished by how perfect the Autofocus was in that setting and so it Was gave me some really amazing results Because obviously you can get some Really high shutter speeds when you're Shooting at F 1.2 I also found that I Had Fairly good results when tracking a Dog splashing through water but again F 1.2 is a really shallow depth of field And with the water droplets spraying up In the air I didn't get as many Keepers

Because there was more distractions in The air but I still got some amazing Shots during that sequence Another situation that really blew my Mind is that I switched into insect Tracking mode because I had seen a Dragonfly flying around unfortunately it Flew into a cedar tree and it just Stayed there so I thought well let's Give it a shot and so I just aimed with All points active I aimed it at that Cedar tree and I took the photo and I Was astonished to find that autofocus Had pinpointed that dragonfly in the Middle of this shot as you can see and You can see that it is perfectly focused On that mine blown I also found that more simple subjects You know static animals the shot of a Rooster shot through leaves all of that Stuff was Zero problem as was shooting Humans at this point iaf tracking on Human subjects is really fantastic and The lens was essentially Flawless even In the hands of inexperienced Photographers for example taking Pictures of me at my birthday this year Uh even with my face down you can see The autofocus just nailed at F 1.2 That's in the hands of someone that is Not a pro photographer at all and so I Was very impressed with autofocus Performance for Stills now for video Autofocus overall was good but not as

Good for a couple of reasons first of All when doing big Focus pools I found That it was a little less confident There's a little bit of pulsing almost Like it rocks past the focus point and Comes back on a few occasions now I did See it do a better job when it was doing My hand and eye test a more obviously Recognizable subject and so the Transitions are smoother but you will Note in both Clips there's some obvious Focus breathing that kind of does draw Extra attention to the focus that is Taking place And doing just a long shot where I just Kind of slid along shooting in foliage Of leaves shooting from one to another Transitions were not super well damped So they're a little bit abrupt but Focused confidence was pretty good but What I did find that it did really well Is to show stickiness when grabbing onto A subject so whether it was these um you Know kind of wildflowers that were Blowing around you can see that even at F 1.2 it's staying locked on there and It also did a pretty good job of Nala Coming towards me which is not something That I always see lenses do well in Video mode so overall I was extremely Impressed with autofocus it was Exceptionally good for Stills and good Enough for video that in most situations I think it's going to do a great job

So let's talk about the image quality Already this is an exceptional Optical Instrument and it kind of spoiled me Because it was one of the very first Lenses I reviewed on the 40 megapixel Level of Fuji sensors and so it Performed well enough that I got the Mistake and thought that lenses were Going to do okay on that platform what I Have found since is that most more Mortal lenses struggle a whole lot more At that high of resolution which is Basically the equivalent of a 90 or 91 Megapixel full frame camera And so making the transition to the Lower resolution point of Sony in this Case 26 megapixels told me that this Lens was going to ace this with flying Colors and of course that's exactly what It did for more of a breakdown let's Dive in let's take a look so testing the Lens on email affords us a unique Opportunity we didn't have on Fuji and That is to see how much of the full Frame image circle is covered as you can See here it's not really a ton of it you Can see that there's some very heavy Mechanical vignette that is covering the Edge of the frame so I tried here to Take that image into crop as much as I Could while to see how much of the image Is left and so as you can see here it's Really not a radical difference from the Actual aps-c crop and so this is

Definitely an aps-c type lens now as far As the actual vignette and distortion on Aps-c you can see here that there's some You know prominent vignette and Basically no Distortion and so if I do My manual correction here on the right You can see it's not all that difficult To clean that up I did nothing to Correct for Distortion because there Basically isn't any and as far as the Vignette I man I put in a plus 55 and Move the midpoint over to zero for a Nice even result now there is a profile That's already out for this lens for the Fuji X version as you can see it works Just fine as well now this is a lens With very few Optical flaws as I know Already it's a really exceptional lens Optically so if I'm going to try to be Critical you can see as far as the bokeh Geometry there's definitely some lemon Slash cat eye shape towards the edges of The frame and if I look here even at a 200 level I can see in this kind of Extreme circumstance a minimal amount of Fringing If I go back to a normal 100 Magnification however you can see that Really there's not not a whole lot to Complain about there is terms of Fringing it's really quite well Controlled So here is our test chart that we'll Take a look at starting at F 1.2 and I

Am doing this on the aps-c mode or the Sony a7r Mark V which is my current Standard for shooting aps-c e-mount Lenses 26 megapixels this is at 200 Magnification as we have seen on Fuji Already this lens is just magnificently Sharp with great contrast even at F 1.2 If you look at the mid frame there's Basically zero drop off it looks Fantastic and even if I go right down Here into the corner it is crisp right Out to the edge of the frame I mean it Is just really fantastically good and we Can see that as far as the centering Centering also looks good around the Frame everywhere that I'm looking detail And contrast is really excellent for Some real world perspective here I shot The same scene at F 1.2 and then at F4 So obviously it's just a couple of Seconds later as I shut down the Aperture but as we can see looking at it Here at f one point two you can see that There's just detail that's right off to The you know the distance there and it Carries right off to the edge of the Frame now what there is is there is less Vignette at F4 that's pretty obvious but As far as the detail I mean it looks Already looks exceptional at F 1.2 this Is a really really consistent sharpness Profile all across the frame which is Quite rare particularly in an F 1.2 lens Now if we stop down just a third of a

Stop from F 1.2 to F 1.4 we can see that There is just a very very minor boost of Contrast and it just there is a little Bit of a change in the overall look of The image and so I think that there's Already less vignette that's apparent And so if you're wanting to get just a Little bit extra Christmas you can shoot At F 1.4 and it already makes a bit of Improvement as you can see now from F 1.4 to F2 just a little bit further in Terms of contrast here in the mid frame You can just see that F2 it is just Brilliantly sharp I mean this this lens Continues to impress me and right off to The edge of the frame now the corners Being nice and bright so now we're we're Up to pretty much Optical perfection Now after this point it's largely going To be about just increasing depth of Field you can see that we're already Pretty much at the maximum potential Sharpness you're going to see as we Compare F2 and F 2.8 there's maybe a Tiny tick more but already we're pretty Much pushing the envelope of what you're Going to achieve here as far as Resolution so a little improvement from F2 to F 2.8 and also if we look here From F 2.8 to F4 maybe a tiny bit more In the edges but for the most part You're just increasing depth of field And from F4 to F 5.6 you're not going to See much of a change here you're already

Basically as good as you're going to get But where this lens is exceptional it's Not just in the sharpness that it Achieves but also its ability to create Really nice bokeh at the same time which I find it's quite rare that you get both Things and so here if we take a look at A pixel level right up close you can see That there's beautiful detail there even Near minimum Focus but the background is Just blurred out out fantastic in fact When it comes to that minimum Focus That's really the only in the Armor that you really don't have that Very very high of magnification just About zero 1.10 times which is not very High at all but we can also see that the Lens is like super sharp even at F 1.2 At minimum focus and so that's kind of How it makes up for it as we've already Discussed what made this lens extra Special to me in the Sony Mount is that Autofocus of course is just so much Better on Sony and so here even at F 1.2 I've got bird in flight and look at the Detail that is there it's not just a Paper tiger with a test chart out in the Real world it's achieving fantastic Results and the improved autofocus on Sony really allows those Optics to shine Again at F 1.2 you can see that the Detail is just gorgeous there at the in The depth of field area Focus now you Can see that already the the far eye is

Completely out of out of focus but skin Tones are very nice and natural and the Deep Focus looks beautiful again another People shot here F 1.2 detail of course Is fantastic but look at how nicely Everything defocuses and again if you're Going to complain about anything it can Be the cat eye shape of the bokeh but The actual defocus and the color Rendition is really fantastic I mean Look at this shot those little smudges By the way those are actually mosquitoes That are that's a mosquito bokeh maybe You've never seen that before but this Shot again with a cap that's moving you Can see the detail in the cat's face is Fantastic but just look how beautiful The colors are and the defocused area is Another shot here and again you can see The detail is fantastic just gorgeous And then the bouquet is also really Really beautiful uh here a shot of a Rooster and the same kind of thing you Can see that here I've purposely shot Through some branches to give some Foreground bokeh and the colors the Contrast everything just pops it is Really really impressive another rooster Here and you can see I mean look at that Detail that is that's just fantastic So flare resistance as the last thing We'll take a look at is not perfect you Can see that there is a little bit of Ghosting here you can also see however

That against the very bright light it's Held up great as far as any kind of Fringing uh and there's nothing you know Hideous that has happened here and even In the middle of the day bright midday Sun with the lens stop down you can see That yes there is a little bit of a Ghosting pattern that's coming off that But it's not doing anything horrendous Here so overall again I I think that That is a pretty decent performance so In conclusion you can see that that is a Pretty Flawless Optical performance this Is one of the best aps-c lenses that I Have tested period the fact that it has Autofocus and F 1.2 along with Optics This good is just an incredibly rare Combination and unlike many lenses that Are kind of optimized for only one Shooting distance and you know give you Or maybe give you very dreamy type Results at F 1.2 this lens is just good At basically all apps your values until Diffraction kicks in and so it gives you Just incredibly good results the price Tag of 549 US Dollars makes this a Really reasonable lens as well I don't Quite know how viltrox is managing to do What they're doing but they're giving us More features they're giving us Increasingly better autofocus and giving Us incredible Optics while still keeping The price tag down it makes this lens an Exceptionally good value it makes me

Really excited to consider the fact that They have in the near future a 27 Millimeter F 1.2 that's been announced That is going to coming in this Pro Series that translates around the 40 or 41 millimeter focal length for full Frame that's a focal length that I love And so I can't wait to try out that lens And so I don't often do this typically I Try to throw out information and let you Make a decision for yourself but for Those of you that are inevitably going To ask the question should I buy one of These lenses or not if you need this Kind of focal length absolutely this is Probably the best best portrait option That I know of on Sony aps-c it delivers Gorgeous results beautiful bow cab Beautiful sharpness beautiful contrast Beautiful color all of those things just Go buy one I'm Dustin Abbott if you look In the description down below you can Find linkage to my full text review you Can also find linkage to an image Galler If you want to see more photos there are Buying links there just being populated Because it's early on but you can make Your pre-orders for the lens there Beyond that of course linkage to follow Myself or Craig on social media you can Get channel merchandise you can become a Patron if you haven't already please Like And subscribe thanks for watching Have a great day and let the light in
