Re-testing on an EOS R5 & R7: Canon RF 28-70mm f/2 ‘L’ USM

[Music] Howdy again everyone a few years ago now I tested the Epic Canon RF 28 to 70 Millimeter F2 lens the brightest Full-frame standard zoom lens ever made And also one of the biggest that was Back in the days of the original Canon EOS r with its 30 megapixel full-frame Sensor and it performed fabulously well On it I was bowled over by its sharpness Actually since then I have upgraded to An EOS R5 with its 45 megapixel full Frame sensor and I'm also testing on an EOS R7 with its 32.5 megapixel aps-c Sized sensor I was borrowing the lens For another video and I thought to Myself why not let's see what it can do On Canon's most badass cameras if you Want to see a full review of this epic And crazy lens rather than just Resolution tests well there's a link in The description below okay let's start On the Canon EOS R5 in-camera Corrections are turned on for this lens At 20 eight millimeter and in the middle Of your image the lens remains Fabulously sharp with great contrast Corner image quality is a little dark And just a touch softer but still Seriously impressive here stop down to F 2.8 or F4 for more brightness in those Corners but not really any more Sharpness the lens takes their sharp Down to about f11 where a little

Softness from diffraction Creeps in and F16 is even softer let's zoom in the Halfway to 45 millimeter now at f2 we Still see excellent image quality in the Middle albeit with just a touch of Purple fringing which I can tell he goes Away at F 2.8 staying at f2 though the Corner image quality is now noticeably Softer but still fairly good overall Stop down to F 2.8 for more brightness And sharpness in those Corners overall But that is as sharp as they get again They stay this sharp down to f11 Let's Zoom all the way into 70 millimeter now Finally we reach a weak spot not and Have two image quality in the middle is Looking a little softer with slightly Hazy contrast Corner image quality is Even worse although we can at least Still see a basic image here stop down To F 2.8 for a little more brightness And sharpness in those corners but back In the middle picture quality looks Excellent now stop down to F4 for even a Touch more contrast in the middle and The corners improve just a little here Too again the lens tastes this sharp Down to f11 overall then for a Record-breaking standard zoom lens on a Full frame camera this is still Generally fabulous image quality Although the 45 megapixel sensor of my R5 does reveal a little softness at f2 At 70 millimeter which is a bit of a

Shame that will impact your portrait Photography a little if you want Absolute razor sharpness alright those Are the results on full frame what about On my R7 though with its 32.5 megahertz Aprc Center at 28 millimeter and F2 Sharpness and contrast in the middle are Good but not great Corner image quality Is noticeably soft stop down to F 2.8 And there's no real Improvement in the Corners but the middle sees noticeably More sharpness and contrast now F4 sees Excellent quality emerging in the middle And the corners are looking a lot better Now too and they look even a touch Better again at F 5.6 they're about the Same at f8 but at f11 diffraction is Clearly making the image softer and for The same reason stopping down to F16 is Very unadvisable let's zoom in the Halfway to 45 millimeter now again Quality in the middle is just good at f2 The corners unfortunately are looking Surprisingly rough here they are just as Bad at F 2.8 but now the middle looks Excellent F4 looks just as good in the Middle but the corners are beginning to Pick up now stop down to F 5.6 though And suddenly those Corners look Excellent f8 looks great too but f11 Sees softness beginning to emerge again Finally let's Zoom all the way into 70 Millimeter at f2 the high resolution Center of the EOS R7 is finally pushing

The lens Beyond its limit as you can see With a somewhat soft hazy image emerging Again Corner image quality is quite poor Stop down to F 2.8 for a noticeable Improvement in the corners and for Picture quality back in the middle to Dramatically improve stop down to F4 for Perfect quality in the middle but just Okay sharpness in the corners again Though stop down to F 5.6 for brilliant Quality to emerge in those Corners they Stay there sharp down to f11 where again Diffraction has an impact so overall the Epic RF 2870 millimeter F2 is still Putting in a nice performance on a Higher resolution full frame camera well Just about anyway but the R7 is just too Much for it I'm afraid especially with Those softer image Corners aps-c camera Owners should probably not spend three Thousand dollars on this thing aside From everything else the zoom range will Be kind of awkward on that 1.6 time Cropped sensor let's hope Cannon soon Release a fast standard zoom lens for Their aps-c RF Mount cameras that would Be wonderful to see take care everyone
