Sony 24-50mm F2.8 G Review

This is the allnew Sony 24-50 f2.8g and It's a direct competitor to the very Popular Tamron 20 to 40 f2.8 zoom and Really the idea behind this lens makes a Whole lot of sense it's a smaller 24 to 70 and it packs in Sony's words most of The popular focal lengths which my guess Would be 24 35 and 50 into one constant F2.8 zoom lens but this thing is is not Quite as wide as that Tamron 24 versus 20 and it's not really as inexpensive as That Tamron either so in this video We're going to see if this lens is any Good as this is a pre-release lens that Sony let me borrow for a few weeks I Don't have retail packaging but my copy Of it came with lens caps and a lens Hood let's start with the size for a Fullframe lens it's very compact Certainly small for a constant f2.8 Zoom Compared to the Sony 20 24 to 70 gm2 This lens is 28 mm or just over an inch Shorter and it's 255 G lighter or just Over half a pound of weight savings the Build and finishes are typical Sony that Is they are very good this being only a G-lens might make you think that it Feels cheap or worse than a GM but to me It doesn't it's a well-made lens Starting at the rear there is a metal Mount electronics and a weather sealing Gasket this 24-50 has a dust and Moisture resistant design as well as a Ling coating on the front element that

Repels water and oil there is a Dedicated aperture ring which has a Switch for the click and it moves just As smoothly as it does on any premium Sony lens in front of that is a zoom Ring which has a very short rotation but It is smooth with minimal effort Required to move it as you rotate it the Front Barrel does extend out about an Inch to give you that wide 24 mm field Of view on top there are lens specs Embossed a nice little G logo here Focus Hold button autofocus manual focus Switch and a Sony logo on the other side At the very front there is a manual Focus ring that is completely electronic But smooth to rotate in both directions Around the front there is a nice sized Front lens element lens specs again Minimum Focus distance of .19 M and a 67 Mm filter thread inside there are a Handful of fancy elements an 11 circular Bladed diaphragm and two linear Motors To control autofocus the autofocus on This lens is designed to keep up with Even the a 93s 120 frames per second the Overall size and design of this lens Reminds me a lot of the 16 to 55g for Apsc they feel very similar both RF 2.8 Zooms although the 16 to 55 extends as You zoom in and it is a longer lens Overall anyway mounted on my a7c this New 24 to 50 makes for a nice combo one Of the first things that I thought when

I heard about this lens is that it's an Ideal kit lens for full-frame cameras And certainly if you want want a lens That will cover most of what you need at A relatively fast f2.8 aperture in a Compact size this lens makes sense but Let's see what this lens is capable of On my trusty Sony a7c which is now an Pretty old full-frame camera all these Are straight out of the camera no Editing no post-processing no fancy Work Ready Set Go All right well this lens performs pretty Well I think and really with modern Technology all of the newest lenses Coming out from Sony Sigma Tamron are Optically brilliant and it becomes Harder and harder to make these reviews Because you have to become more and more Fine tooth nitpicking about small things That really don't make that much of of a Difference but optically this thing is Near perfect sharpness is excellent Whether you are looking at the center of The frame or just the corners and no Matter the focal length there's really Nothing to complain about here just Because I was curious I put this new 24 To 50 up against the only f2.8 fullframe Zoom that I have around which is the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 G2 and here are the Results as you can see in the center and Taking a look at the

Corners there you are are now it's not Going to be a drastic difference but There is a slight Improvement in the Corners and the center I'd say is pretty Onar but if you want absolute sharpness Across the frame I'd say the Sony has The edge here vignetting is not an issue With this lens Barrel Distortion really Not an issue that's as long as you keep In camera Corrections on even pesky Chromatic aberration while seemingly Unavoidable it's very well controlled to The point that it is impressive there is A little bit of green and purple at Times but compared to lenses of old this Is absolutely impressive performance Flare performance is pretty good there Is some loss of contrast and you can see Some colors and Elemental Reflections As You move to the side but this is better Than a majority of zoom lenses that I've Tested and when it comes to focus Breathing Sony claims that it is quote Reduced but I don't know how to quantify That there is some Focus breathing if You rack from one end to the other it's Not as bad as some lenses but it's also Not as good as a cinema lens or even the Sigma 70 to2 200 that I recently Reviewed that lens basically has no Focus breathing without any fancy Breathing compensation programming but This lens is compatible with Sony's Focus breathing compensation autofocus

Performance is excellent whether you are Taking portraits or recording video Tracking and autofocus is as good as any Lens that I've tested the linear Motors Are silent they are quick and they are Accurate this lens doesn't have the Fancy XD linear Motors out of the GM M Line and it only has two Motors instead Of the four in the 24 to70 GM but you'd Be hard pressed to notice a performance Difference at least on my a7c so when You look at this lens as a whole the So-called problems are very minuscule Overall as a package I'd say that Optically this is brilliant and you will Not be complaining even if you're using This lens for professional work shooting Weddings whatever it is there are really Two things that I wish that Sony would Have done with this lens that would have Pushed me to maybe a little bit more Excitement I think it's a great lens but I think it could have been just oh it Could have been amazing if number one They just made it wider something like This in a 20 to 50 focal range would be Amazing and the reason for this is Obviously the newer camera bodies all Have electronic image stabilization or Eis and that requires a crop into your Image for stabilization now if you're Using this lens let's say for vlogging Purp purposes to record yourself when You're traveling to record yourself in a

Small room there's a big difference Between a stabilized 24 mm field of view Versus a stabilized 20 mm field of view That 4 mm difference is a lot and this Is more of an issue if you are planning On using this lens for video work Because for photos it's really not an Issue you're not going to be taking Photos of yourself at 20 mm so it really Doesn't matter but for video it's a Different story now I do think that Having 24 4 35 and 50 mm all included in One Zoom is great and that's something That I can't say about the Tamron Because you don't really have that 50 mm Field of view for portraits but I just Think that if this Sony lens was a touch Wider like the recent 20 to 70 f4g I Would be more tempted to buy one and Maybe Sony is restraining themselves Just so that they don't affect the sales Of the 20 to 70 F4 negatively I don't Know what the story is now the second Thing is the price now there are two Ways of looking at this because in Sony's world this lens is a bargain Because you're getting effectively the Optical performance or maybe 95 to 97% Of G Master Optics in a g lens in a Smaller body still f2.8 yeah you give up That 70 mm reach but it's a compact lens And you're paying about half the price Of the GM but certainly if you compare This to the Tamron 20 to 40 this is a

Relatively expensive lens I think that If this lens came in at 900 or even 1,000 us it would be an easy purchase For a lot of people but what do I know Value is a relative term and I guess I Should say that this lens as of the date Of this video is going to launch for 1,00 to 1300 but probably closer to 1,00 USD so not cheap but again compared to The G Master it is kind of cheap Honestly thinking about it I would be Fine with the price if this was a 20 to 50 I think that wideness factor would Have been a big big plus side now when I Think objectively between this lens and The 28 to 75 Tamron If Money Was No Object and both of these were priced Identically which one would I rather Have I honestly would pick the Sony even Though you give up a little bit of the Range this thing gets you to 24 which is Wider than 28 which is usable in a lot More situations um yeah you give up the 75 mm but but I think that optically This is a superior lens as well and it's Also more compact a little bit lighter Maybe and so I could see myself using This a little more frequently than the Tamron if I shot full frame all the time But I don't anyway those are just my Thoughts uh maybe a little bit of a Rambling here at the end of the video uh Ultimately this is a good lens and I Think that it probably will be quite

Popular uh for those who are looking to Travel light and still have excellent Optics and a good usable Focus range or Zoom range I should say let me know what Your thoughts are down in the comment Section below if you're interested in Reading more about this lens or checking It out I'll have a link in the Description thank you guys so much for Watching stay tuned for more and have a Nice day bye-bye
