Sony a6700 Tutorial – Complete Beginner Guide

The Sony a6700 is a beast of a camera if You set it up the right way otherwise It's a bit underwhelming and you're Really not getting the most out of this Camera so in this video I'm going to Show you the exact settings you need to Get the best photo and video quality Along with other features like autofocus Low light stabilization and so much more By the end of this video you're going to Be a camera ninja getting the most out Of your a6700 and as always I'll leave Links to all the gear we talk about Today in the description down below and If you want to get better at photos and Videos just 1 hour check out the free Training in the links down below so First up let's go over all the buttons So you know exactly where everything is And you actually know how to work your Camera so first up you obviously have Your on and off button but this button Right here is also a shutter button Specifically for photos right below that Is a button with a red circle on it now This is your video record button the two Buttons are separate so you want to make Sure you're using the right one and Right next to that is a custom buttton This is C2 this camera actually has Several custom buttons on it and you can Set them up to either bring up a Specific spefic menus or change certain Settings these buttons are really really

Useful and right next to that is Actually a black unlabeled knob this can Actually be custom set up to do Different things but for me I actually Have it set to change my ISO but you can Also set it up to change your shutter Speed or aperture and right next to that Is the mode dial now the mode dial is Very important you actually have Different modes for your camera like Aperture priority shutter priority but The one we want to focus on is M this is Going to give you the most amount of Control over your camera and shoot Sho An m is going to also just give you Better results overall and you'll see Why in this video but one thing to know You also have 1 two and three here these Are three separate custom modes that you Can set up for yourself for different Shooting scenarios like you can have one For portraits one for nightlife one for Landscape and this way you can quickly Switch between different shooting modes Based on what you're shooting and right Below that is a selector to go between Photo video and slow motion mode and It's really important to make sure You're in the right camera mode if it's Photos you want to be shooting in photos If you're in video you want to be Shooting in video for example photo mode Does allow you to record video but You're not getting the best video

Quality so you want to make sure you're In the right mode and over here you have A front dial that will actually allow You to change one of your major settings Like aperture ISO and shutter by default This is set to aperture but you can Change it and on the back here you of Course have your menu button to access All of your major menu settings and if You go to the back of the camera you Actually have a scroll wheel right here Now if you turn this you can actually Change your settings but you have to Have a setting selected so if I hit Right on here I can actually access my ISO menu and it will let me change my ISO once again this camera is very Customizable you have several ways of Getting to your ISO in different Settings and if you hit up here you will Get to your display and if you actually Press down here it will just give you a Simple exposure adjustment where you can Either make your image brighter or Darker however this only works when your ISO is set to auto and if you hit left Here you'll actually get to your drive Mode and this will control how fast your Camera is shooting in it's photo mode Specifically if you want to take one Photo at a time you want to take 10 Photos a second this will control all of That and also if you want your photo to There to be a delay like you can hit the

Shutter button there's a 10-second delay And then it takes a photo there's a Bunch of cool interesting modes here That I'll talk about later and there's Also a back focus button here that's Really useful if you hit it it will Actually immediately Focus to whatever Your camera is looking at this is really Useful for just quickly catch focus on Something but on top of that when you're Looking at your photos once you've Already taken them in camera if you hit That button again it will also allow you To zoom into your photos and one really Important button right here is the FN Button when you hit this you will Actually have your function menu come up That has a bunch of really critical Settings that you can change which we Will talk about later but this is a Really important menu to just know how To access and the last thing I want to Go over is you'll notice there's a bunch Of icons over here and even if you hit Display they don't go away this is Actually a quick menu that allows you to Access a bunch of your settings more Quickly if you actually swipe left on The screen it will go away and if you Swipe back right it will come about this Is a really useful menu and I'll talk About exactly how to use it and make the Best of it in just a second so now that You know where everything on your camera

Is and you know what buttons to access Let's talk about how to actually get the Best photo and video quality out of your Camera by using the right settings so Let me show you guys how to get the best Possible photo quality from your a67 00 For this you want to make sure you're in Photo mode and you want to hit the menu Button to bring up your main menus now You want to make sure you've got the Right camera icon selected here which is The this red one and if you're not in The right menu just press left on your D-pad until you get all the way to the Left and then click up and down and You'll get to the right menu so once You're in the right camera icon menu Your first option you'll see is image Quality record now within this you have A bunch of options so let's talk about It the first one you'll see is jpeg h if Switch now these are two separate types Of files that your camera can do for Taking photos now heif is not Understandable unless you're using an Editing software which kind of defeats The purpose of a casual codec and not Everywhere can actually understand it And if I actually click into HF you'll Actually see a corresponding environment Is required for still images recorded in HF this file format gets a little too Complicated so unless you actually want To edit your images for most C ual

Shooters I only recommend shooting in Jpeg tablets computers can all Understand them jpeg is such a universal File format and it doesn't take up a lot Of space and if you do want to edit your Photos it's actually better to just Simply record in raw because raw is Ultimately not going to take up that Much that much more room maybe a little Bit more room underneath that you have File format and in file format you'll See raw and jpeg this is to decide if You want to shoot in both raw and jpeg At the same time or just raw alone or Jpeg alone if you're shooting raw in Jpeg I actually do recommend that Because a lot of times when you open up Your files on your computer your Computer can't show you what the raw Files look like unless you open up Another editing software and just having Like 300 raw files on your card you just Don't know what's on there so having a Little jpeg preview next to it is really Useful also if you're a professional It's nice to have the raw and then be Able to send the jpegs to the clients And underneath that you have raw file Type and within that you have losses Compressed and compressed now losses Compressed is going to be more data on Your card and compressed is going to be A little less data on your card Personally because it's a lossless

Compress it's basically still a Compressed file type but it does it in a Way where you can't really notice the Amount of data that's being lost through The compression and with compress you'll See a slight decline in quality I Personally recommend shooting in Compressed for the most time because it Lets your card shoot for longer and on Top of that you're really not getting That much more quality by shooting lost This compressed maybe a little bit Someone who's like a professional Photographer that's shooting $10,000 a Day campaign might have a different Opinion but I think for who this camera Is for which is like casual Shooters and Young professionals compressed is just Fine and again it also lets you shoot For longer with this card with before This camera needs a break so I recommend Compressed underneath that you have jpeg Quality now jpeg is such a small file Type that it doesn't really matter if You're shooting on a smaller file type Or a bigger file type so I just Recommend shooting an extra fine even if You don't need these jpeg for anything Professional why not just have the best Quality available to you unless you're Really low on space then go ahead and Shoot light and underneath that you'll See jpeg size now you want to make sure That you never accidentally turn this

Down to any of the other modes you want To make sure jpeg 23 megap large and Underneath that you have aspect ratio Now this is where you can pick different Aspect ratio as in like how big your Photos and videos are depending on what You need them for 3×2 is kind of like Very Square 4 4 X3 is pretty square 16×9 Is what you're seeing this right here Which which is also known as horizontal Video and but 1X one is just a square One by one so unless you really need to Shoot for a specific aspect ratio I Recommend most people just leave it in 3x two this way you have room to play Around with it in terms of editing but For me personally I actually shoot all My photos in 16 by9 because I know They're always going to end up on YouTube and I need them in this aspect Ratio all right now that we know how to Get the best photo quality there's still A lot more in terms of actually getting Good photos such as your autofocus how Fast you're shooting and also your color So let's talk about that next so the First thing you want to do is you want To go into your drive mode by hitting The left button on your scroll wheel and That will open up this menu now in here You'll see a bunch of different options But the ones we want to focus on is one Single shooting if you just want to take One photo that's it single shooting and

Underneath that you have continuous mode But if you hit left or right on your D-pad you'll actually see that you can Switch between different shooting modes Here you have high high sorry you have High plus High mid and low this will Change your frame rate a little bit the Highest you can get is high plus which Is about 10 frames per second sorry 11 Frames per second high is like a few Frames below that mid is maybe five or Six low is 2 to 3 frames per second if You want to get the most out of your Camera High plus is obviously the way to Go but often what I find is people are Shooting so many photos that you just End up with a bunch of photos that are All the same that you you don't really Need so you want to like do some Experiments to figure out exactly what Mode works best for you for me if I'm Shooting just portraits mid is good mid Is like a good vacation uh shooting mode High plus is like if there's a lot of Action that I need to get and honestly Sometimes if I'm just by myself low is Good too two three frames make sure your Camera wasn't shaky two three frames get A solid one and you're out of there Underneath that you also have self timer Now self timer is pretty obvious you hit The shutter button it'll count down and Then it'll take a photo and if you hit Left and right you can actually change

It from 2 seconds to 5 Seconds to 10 Seconds pretty useful feature next to That is also self-timer continuous what This does is it gives you a choice where It's like for 10 second you hit the Shutter button it'll give you 10 seconds To set up and it'll take three photos Continuously five photos continuously Three or 5 seconds and then three images Continuously this is really useful Especially if you're if you need to take Photos and you don't have anyone to help You this is a really useful thing to do And another thing you can also do is you Can connect your A6 uh 700 to the Sony App and use use it uh as a wireless Remote that way as well so next up you Want to make sure you're in the right Focus mode for this you want to hit your FN button it will bring up this menu and You want to scroll over to your focus Mode which is this AF plus something Icon over there you want to click into It and you have a ton of modes here but The main ones we want to focus on is one Single shot AF where every time you Press the shutter button it gets Focus You take a photo and then every time you Press the shutter button again will Basically just kind of move at a slow Pace like this what I recommend is Actually automatic AF where it'll pretty Much decide what Focus mode you need or Continuous AF where it's always tracking

I either go with autofocus AF or AFC You're not losing anything by using the Better focus modes where you could Potentially lose a shot if you're just Using single shooting and right Underneath that you'll see another icon That says Focus area now this is going To determine what area of your sensor The camera's focusing on for autofocus So up here you actually have wide where It looks at the entire autofocus area And we'll pretty much just figure out What it needs to look at underneath that You have Zone where you can actually Switch up these little zones on screen And if you always know something's going To come in the middle or you know Something's going to come in the top Left so you can set you can just set Your Zone to just focus on one area Underneath that you have Center fix Which is basically just going to focus On whatever is right in the middle of Your frame and underneath Center fix you Have your spot M which is basically your Spot manual and if you hit left and Right you can actually change the size Of your spot so over here I can have Like a pretty large spot and I can move This around using the d-pad if I want I Can have a smaller spot and once again I Can use this move this around using the D-pad this is one of my favorite Autofocus modes it really lets you get

In there and just really customize the Autofocus for whatever shooting scenario You have this is how I usually like to Shoot so now that you've got the best Quality of photos by using the right File type you're shooting photos as fast As you want and you've also got good Autofocus the last thing you need is Good colors and for this you want to Click into your FN menu and over here on The left you'll see creative look this Will give you a bunch of different Creative looks that will give you Interesting filters over your photos but Something to note is that this only gets Applied to JPEG and not raw and if you Pick any of these modes that you like And you click right using the d-pad can Also adjust your contract cont Highlights Shadows fade saturation Sharpness sharpness range Clarity like a Whole bunch of stuff you can technically Make your own custom look and get your Photos to look exactly how you like it I Really appreciate this feature while we Don't exactly have filmic looks like the Way Fuji does on their cameras this is a Pretty close and a pretty big win for Sony users in my opinion now a lot of You guys have been asking me how do I Get the best low light performance from The a6700 and that's really going to Depend on whether you're shooting photos Whether you're shooting videos what

Picture profile you're in so it's really Hard to give you a specific answer but My recommendations are is to not shoot Higher than 6400 ISO and always shoot in Full stops of iso as in 800600 3200 you TR want to try not to go past 6400 ISO In some cases you might be able to find That it's as good it looks pretty good At 12,800 ISO but that's really Stretching it and 6400 in my opinion is The highest you should go with this Camera all right now that you're killing It with your photo game let me show you How to level up your videos with just a Few simple settings so for this you want To make sure you're in video mode and You want to hit menu now it'll bring up A bunch of menus here but you want to Make sure you go all the way to the left And you've got the red camera icon Picked and then once you click right You'll see image quality and record you Want to click right again and you'll see File format use the middle button to Click into this and you'll see a bunch Of different options here now this can Get a pretty confusing for one simple Video but I'll kind of explain it this Way if you want to get the best quality Video for yourself or social media usage You want to either pick xavcs 4K or xav Cshd these are pretty much like going to Be your bread and butter videos it gives You really high quality this is exactly

What you want and this will be readable By the most amount of computers out There this is going to make your video File format very compatible with the Machines out there if you want to get The best possible quality you want to Make sure you milk every ounce of Quality from this camera for Professional use because if you're not a Professional and you're not sending this To a color house or for aned to an Editing house you're just going to end Up with really big files that are hard To work with but for that you want to Pick xavc SII 4K xavc sihd so for Example we're going to go with the xavcs 4K once you click into that underneath That you'll see movie settings you want To click into that and you'll see two Options record frame rate and record Settings so your frame rate is going to Depend on exactly what you're shooting But here's a brief overview 24 is the Cinematic frame rate that most people Use it's what's in movies it's what's in TV shows it just has this movie quality To it 30 frames per second is what You'll see in commercials a lot of times Is what you'll often see on your phone It's what YouTube videos are shot on it Has a little bit more smoothness to it It looks a little bit bit more Commercial but most serious Shooters Don't shoot in uh 30 frames per second

Some really big YouTubers like MKBHD Mr Beat Beast shootting 30 frames per Second but they're obviously not making Cinematic content 60 frames per second Is going to make your video look Ultra Smooth a lot of times people say that it Can kind of make your videos look like a Soap opera or like just like a daytime TV show it has like a really cheap look To it but a lot of times Sports Broadcasts actually prefer to use 60 Frames per second because you can show All the mov movement with the athletes And also by shooting 60 frames per Second you can also slow down your video And get two times slow motion and then Lastly you have 120 frames per second This is good for slow motion mainly and In 120 frames per second mode you can Slow down your video by five times this Is really good for fashion commercials For artistic use but one thing to note Is that the a6700 does crop into the Sensor and basically Zooms in your image Of when shooting in 4k 120p mode there's Actually two separate ways to shoot in 120p mode and one is definitely better Than the other and I'll show you guys How to do that so for this example let's Go with 24 frames per second and Underneath that you'll see record Settings so once you click into that You'll see a bunch of different bit Rates you'll see 100 megabits 422 10

Bits and then 8bits for our usage you Want to go with 10 bit 10bit is just Going to give you better video quality 8bit is going to save you space but if You're paying for a 10 bit camera you Want to record in 10 bit and one thing You'll notice is if I change the record Frame rate to let's say 60 you'll also Notice the 200m which is your data rate Is also going to go up which brings me Perfectly to the other point that I was Going to make is if you pick xavc SII 4K When you go into movie settings and you Pick your frame rate what you'll notice Is that it's actually grayed out Underneath the record settings and you Have a constant rate of 600m when Shooting in 60 frames per second this Way you have a constant bit rate for Your video you're getting the most Amount of data in your video and this Way you have more room and more dat data To play around with when it comes to Post production so unless you really Need all that data don't recommend Shooting in uh xavc SI and another thing To note is that if you go to xavc HS 4K This uh message comes up a corresponding Environment is recorded is needed for Playback and this is because shooting in This mode it actually uses a different Codec called H265 I might be wrong on that name but That codec is simply less compatible

With certain devices but if you're using Apple silicon or the new your Apple Computers this is going to just run way Faster on those computers so if you do Have an Apple computer X8 VCS is a Really good codec to use if you're an Apple user but for most of you guys You'll run into issues where other People are having trouble with your Files one thing that I do want to show You guys is how to get the best slow Motion out of this camera and there's a Few tricks to doing that so one you can Simply go over to your movie settings And pick 120 frames per second for this You get 280 uh megabits per second data Rate 422 10bit but you'll notice right Below movie settings you also have snq Settings this is your slow and quick Motion settings so once you go into Frame rate settings here you'll actually See that you have two options here Record frame rate and frame rate and What this basically allows you to do is Slow the video down in camera so you Don't have to do post- production to it If you're a casual user that's never Going to touch Adobe premere or like Final Cut this is how you want to do it You want to pick your record frame rate To be as low as possible but not lower Than 24 and you want your record frame Rate to either be 60 or 120 and you'll Notice at the bottom of the screen it

Will actually tell you what it's going To do if I go to 60 you'll get 2.5 slow Motion if I go to 120 you'll get five Times slow motion and you can also do Quick motion here which is basically Let's pick 30 frames per second and I'll Pick a frame rate that's 15 frames per Second and this will basically speed up Your video in camera and this is also a Good way to do hyperlapses where you Basically just walk through and it's Almost like a video time lapse which is A good way to do it but one thing that You'll notice if I'm recording at 24 for My record frame rate and 120 in my U Frame rate and I go down to record Setting you'll notice that I only have The ability to pick 100 megabits per Second for to 10 bits if you're a casual User this is not going to make a huge Difference to you but if you're a Professional don't shoot like this cuz It's better to slow down your video in Post production than to basically just Up with like less quality video in slow Motion and even though it's slow motion It might just be 2 seconds of your video You want to make sure you get the Highest quality so that's one thing to Note and below that you'll also see time Lapse settings now time-lapse the Simplest way to explain it is that frame Rate settings it's kind of like with Slow motion you want to set your record

Frame rate and then you want to set your Intervals and what you'll actually Notice is that it'll tell you at the Bottom what um shooting for 5sec move You're recording yeah you'll need for Basically every 5 Seconds you'll need 10 Minutes for every uh 5 Second you'll Need two minutes and this is a good way To gauge how long your time lapse is Going to take but uh time-lapse and Video and uh slow motion two really Useful features on this camera and if You go into record setting you also have The same 100 megabits per second 10 bit Make sure you record at the highest Quality possible and yeah this camera Can do a lot and I'm really happy that It does all these things also in case You're wondering the autofocus settings From photo mode do car over to the Autofocus settings in video mode so if You know one you know the other one but I quickly want to go over one or two Things here if you go into your FN menu And you go back over to focus modes You'll notice that you just have less Focus modes you want to make sure you've Got continuous autofocus picked Underneath that you've got Focus area But you've got pretty much the same Options so just wanted to quickly let You guys know about that and one really Cool option that's in video mode as well As Focus map so once you turn Focus map

On it will just show me what's in focus And it'll kind of give me like I guess Like a little blue red thing red is Super out of focus blue is sort of kind Of in focus and whatever is actually in Focus is in Gray but one thing that I Want to show you guys to really get the Most out of your camera is the video Colors and colors are pretty complicated When it comes to video so I'm going to Make it simple you want to hit your FN Button and on the top left you'll see Pp1 sounds bad but it's called it's for Picture profile and under underneath This you'll see a bunch of PPS picture Profiles it's dirty but I don't mean to Be and if you don't want if you just Want to use a standard Sony colors just Have this off but if you really want to Get the most out of this there's a few Ways to do that you want to pick pp1 Pick your profile one and you want to Right click and you'll see a bunch of Options come up but most of them don't Matter you want to go into gamma and you Want to pick either SL log 3 and in color mode pick SL log 3 uh SC gamut 3 cine this is going to Give you a super flat picture profile That you're going to have to color grade This is something for like really Serious hardcore video Shooters it's not What I recommend to like casual moms and Dads but if you are a casual Mom and Dad

What you can do is go into Cinema 1 through four each of them is Going to give you a slightly different Look to it I personally really like Cinema four and color Mode Cinema and this is going to give You a little bit of a flatter look that You're going to be able to kind of tweak The colors of for yourself like put it Through an Instagram filter or whatever And it's going to give you a much better Looking video and another option you Have is also called s cotone in gamma And in color mode you want to just pick The one that goes with it which over Here would be as cotone again and and This is once again going to give you a Pretty flat look it's similar to uh the Cinema profiles but this is going to Give you a little bit more of a filic Look to it and you're basically just Going to be able to tweak your colors Along now if you don't want to do any Color tweaking you just you're just like Dude make me something that looks Interesting right out of the camera Unfortunately Sony cameras are probably Not the way to go but what I recommend To most people is that you pick a mode Like movie or still let's go with still And and then pick still again and you Simply bump up your saturation a little Bit to make your colors more Punchy Leave color phase and color depth alone

Bumping a res saturation will help a Little bit unfortunately when it comes To video you don't have the same Creative modes the way you do with Photos one of the things that the a6700 Does really well is that it's pretty Good at vlogging so you want to make Sure you have your camera set up for the Best possible audio for this you want to Go back into your menus and make sure You've got this red icon picked here and You'll see audio recording down here you Want to go over here to audio recording Obviously make sure that's on and you Want to just simply speak to your camera Check one two check check check and You'll see these audio levels here at The top if you actually hit left here on Your d-pad you'll notice that these Audio recording levels go down check Check check and they go down so you want To basically speak to your camera while Looking at it at about the same like if You're holding it in front of you at About the volume that you want to speak To it and you just want to make sure Your audio levels don't hit red here if I get really loud it'll go to Red but Then you'll also you guys will also hear Me on YouTube and it'll be really Annoying and underneath that you'll also See audio out timing you want to make Sure that is set to live and underneath That you have wind noise reduction and

You want to make sure wind noise Reduction is actually set to off because It will affect video just on and off Here and there so you want to make sure That is set to off to get the best Possible quality from your Audio Mic and Just to note that the audio mics are Actually on the front of your camera Over here so when you're speaking to it Make sure just be mindful of where these Mics are so now that you've got high Quality video one thing that's really Important is that you want to make sure It's stable for this you want to hit Menu again make sure you're in the right Camera icon and number eight over here Is image stabilization click into that And within here you've got two options Active and standard active is going to Look the best because it's got a actual Stabilization on the sensor but also Digital stabilization around it but it Does add a little bit of a crop to your Sensor which I don't think is that big Of a deal I think it's worth the Tradeoff and standard does not add a Crop to your stabilization going to be a Little bit shaky one thing to note is That when you have active stabilization On don't use this camera with a gimbal Or a stabilization it's just going to be Too much stabilization on the sensor I Actually recommend setting this to off When you're on a gimbal to really let

The gimbal do the best possible job and Standard honestly no point in using Standard active all the way and Underneath that you also see steady shot Adjustment I would always leave this to Auto this way the camera decides what The focal length is and what kind of Stabilization needs to add especially if You're using Sony lenses it's a really Smart system it's going to do a great Job I would only recommend changing this If you're using manual lenses and then In that case you can go to manual and Then you can pick your individual focal Length that you're using and if you Start following these steps you're going To get amazing photos and videos with Perfect autofocus perfect stabilization And everything is going to look Spectacular if you guys have any Questions let me know in the comments Down below and I'll see you guys in the Next video peace
