Howdy once again everyone and let's get Straight into testing The Living Daylights out of one of neon's best and Most expensive new portrait lenses for Their mless Zed Mount cameras the Z 85 Mm f1.2 s its price of £2,600 here in The UK or about $2,600 is prohibitive for sure so There's no way I'd have been able to Test it without nickon UK loaning me one For a couple of weeks for which I'm Thankful but this is still going to be a Totally independent review if this lens Has any faults we'll snuffle them out For sure and as I mentioned this is a Dream lens for portrait work as well as Being useful for subject or perhaps Event Photography especially wedding Photography f1.2 lets a ton of light Into your camera for shooting indoors or In Darker situations as well as getting Your backgrounds very dramatically out Of focus you never forget the first time You shot with an 85 mm f1.2 so it's no Wonder more and more manufacturers have Been putting them to Market in recent Years the disadvantage of an f1.2 lens Like this is not only its very high Price but also as you can see it's Rather gigantic size this thing is Big Even for a lens of this type and at over 1.1 kg or a bit over 22b it's really Heavy too this thing will balance best On a bigger camera body but it does
Handle beautifully as you'd expect for An optic in this price range it has good Weather ceiling and auto manual focus Switch at the back one of Nikon's smooth Turning customizable control rings at The back also an extra function button As well as a very large rubberized Manual focus ring which turns very Smoothly the Focus motor responds very Well and precisely to it being turned Although as you can see here the land Suffers from considerable Focus Breathing zooming in rather as you focus More closely to your subject the lens's Autofocus motor is silent accurate and Pretty fast as you can see here it's Possible to get even faster mechanisms Than this but considering the large Internal glass elements that need to be Pushed and pulled around this is a very Good speed the lens's filter thread size Is a large 82 mm and it comes with a big Plastic Hood it does not feature image Stabilization but virtually all Nikon's Zed Mount cameras have it built in Anyway overall this is exactly the kind Of build quality we all want to be Seeing at this price point but do not Underestimate this thing's size and Weight it really is a bit of a behemoth All right let's look at image quality Now I'll be testing it today on a Nikon Z7 camera with its fullframe 45 map Sensor in camera Corrections are turned
On in the middle of the image we are Seeing great sharpness and very good Contrast first let's take a look in the Corners they are looking just a touch Softer now with a little haziness on Contrasting edges right in the very Edges but still this is overall a great Image considering we're shooting at f1.2 Stop down to F2 though and image quality Quickly becomes way punchier in those Corners and very sharp and back in the Middle at f2 image quality goes from Being great to being essentially razor Sharp here's f2.8 where the middle Continues to look perfect and the Corners now look even better than ever And from F4 to f8 the lens is razor Sharp from corner to corner stop down as Far as f11 or F16 and we begin to see Some softening due to the effects of Defraction overall the 885mm f1.2 is a Fantastically sharp optic no matter what You do with it even on a 45 megapix Camera although I was hoping for just an Edge of extra sharpness than the lens Was providing at f1.2 especially in the Corners all right let's turn off those In camera Corrections now and look at Distortion and vignetting the lens Projects negligible pin cushion Distortion barely even noticeable the Corners unsurprisingly look a bit dark At f1.2 at f1.4 though and F2 they Brighten up very quickly so this is a
Great performance this lens can focus Down to 85 CM from your subject just Average for an 85 mm lens close up in Quality is just a little softer at f1.2 Although pleasingly we don't see much in The way of color fringing f1.4 sees just A tiny Improvement but at f2 we are back To seeing excellent sharpness let's see How the lens works against Bright Lights Now it's just an average performance Here flaring and glaring is clearly Visible but it's not too harsh or opaque This is a common side effect of using a Lens with big glass elements but it's Hardly a serious problem and the lens His large Hood should help things here Next Baka Neon have been the Barons of Baka recently with their triumphant Planner lens producing especially Gorgeous backgrounds and they have Managed to hit a home run with this lens Also as the 85mm f1.2 turns even more Difficult areas and transitional zones Into beautifully rendered backgrounds They look truly wonderful here and Finally related to B comes longitudinal Chromatic aberration at f1.2 it is Noticeable with colorful Walker Highlights making their presence known At f2 they are reduced and at F4 they're Basically gone overall well although Shooting with this lens gave me arm ache After a while I ultimately didn't care Because the results are so generally
