Hands On with Zhiyun’s Molus X100 Portable Video Light

Zion is making quite the pivot into Lighting lately and this is their newest Release this is called the molus X100 And it's probably the coolest looking Light I've ever seen Zion sent me not Only this one with a bunch of Accessories they sent me multiple of These this is what it looks like so it's A very cool looking kind of a vintage Looks like a camera honestly and this is A little light I mean I'll turn it on For you right now Yeah yeah that's pretty bright let's Check it out in typical Zion fashion These lights are available in kits with Various accessories that affect the Purchase price there's a ball joint Adapter a mini tripod a selfie stick Extension plate Bowens mount adapter and Two portable light modifiers a mini Softbox and a dome diffuser as for the Light itself it comes in a nice gray Zippered carrying case and inside are Some manuals a pouch a nice large Battery strap and the light itself just Check out how compact this thing is it's Very thin with a large fan that's Visible through the light and there is Transparent plastic where you can see The components inside very cool vents on Every side to cool things down there's a Nice little reflector here that's Included and finally an AC adapter to Plug the light in the real appeal of

This light is the fact that it is so Compact yet so powerful for the size This is a Cobb light and it's 100 watt That is 100 watt plugged in in or on Battery power thanks to Zion's patented Quick release batteries the light itself Is a remarkable 385 grams which means You don't have to carry around heavy cob Lights anymore if you are traveling and Perhaps more importantly you don't have To plug them in anymore the fact that This light is so compact is only made Possible because of the cooling system Which Zion is calling dynavort Technology which they say they used gyro Modeling and fluid dynamics and Algorithms to raise the cooling Efficient quote significantly all I can Tell you is that this fan is Impressively quiet it's near silent I Mean it's as close to silent as it gets And it doesn't turn on all the time Either only when it's under a decent Load so if you have this light at one Percent as I have it at one percent Right now you'll never hear it turn on But as you crank it up it may turn on You will probably not hear it though now I had the opportunity to use several of These lights to help my cousin with a Couple of magazine photo headshots and Just some photos for her work and let me Just tell you they were very impressive We ended up shooting any room with no

Visible Outlets so I was happy that I Could run these lights completely on Batteries for the one hour photo session And the results were great in a dim room With no natural light sources and Nothing but a chandelier these lights Made an incredible difference they were Silent they were small and light so I Can easily move them on light stands and They offered excellent constant light Which I prefer massively over using Off-camera flashes especially when you Are photographing people they allow for Pupil meiosis so you get nice colorful Eyes in your subject the molus X100 is a Bi-color LED meaning you can adjust the Color temperature from 2700k to 6500k With the turn of a knob CRI value is Greater than or equal to 95 and tlci is Greater than or equal to 97 meaning that They are very very color accurate lights And as for brightness these max out at 3881 Lux at 4300k and 100 brightness now That is not as bright as the lights that I use in my studio in fact this is one Of two lights that I have in my YouTube Setup and these max out at 10 000 Lux so A little bit brighter than these compact Lights but look at the size difference I Mean that's incredible the thing that You have to realize about these lights Is you're probably not going to Max them Out for example my key light when I'm Recording a YouTube video I use at six

Percent that's right six out of a Hundred so it's not very much at all in Fact I could take one of these moles Lights and perhaps crank them up a Little bit higher and use it as my key Light and get away with it and be Perfectly fine for YouTube video Creation in fact what I've done is I Have replaced my key light with one of These x100s I bet you didn't notice but I have it cranked two 15 percent to Imitate kind of the same level of light That I typically get in a YouTube video So you have to crank them up a little Bit more compared to larger lights but Again the size difference I mean this is Tiny in comparison to this which is Already a small light on its own and I Should say I'm running off of battery Power right now which is again Incredible and let's talk about the Accessories because the accessories that They include at first I wasn't too sure About why were you sending me a selfie Stick that's extendable and why are you Sending me a mini tripod and then I Figured this out and just like that you Have a light setup so I have it on an Extendable selfie stick on a mini tripod You can move this thing around it's Extra super duper lightweight you can Point this light in any direction using The ball head I mean this is so easy and Convenient you probably can't fit a

Giant modifier on the front of this on a Tiny tripod but how great is this if you Want to put it behind your subject and Hide it with their body for some head Shots or portraits I mean look at that It's done it's hidden behind there and You don't have to travel around with Massive of lights and light stands and Accessories and cables this is Completely Wireless in fact with this Selfie stick you can have potentially Someone recording with you running Around with this on a stick and just Lighting your talent I mean the Opportunities and the possibilities are Pretty endless with a setup so Compact And so lightweight the Bowens adapter is Also excellent I used it to attach the Giant Beauty Dish that I use in my Studio to these lights and it worked Perfectly that's also what I used as a Key light for my headshots nice soft Lighting makes a difference and the Little Dome and diffuser is great it's Easy to install and remove and collapse Very compact so taking them with you on Location is a breeze and the size let me Demonstrate again so here is the mollus X100 and let me compare it to a compact Cob light the one I have in my studio so Here is the light itself here is the Power brick that you have to take with You and then the cables because [Music]

Can run this light off of battery power With the v-mount but that requires an Additional adapter that's also kind of Bulky and then you have two wires Running all over the place but I mean Hopefully you guys can see this Like taking that with you on location Versus versus This and in terms of performance again It's this one doesn't get as bright but It's quieter than this light okay so the Moral of the story is that if you're in A designated space such as a studio it Doesn't really matter you can have the Biggest lights in the world you can have Them on light stands you could have them Hanging from the walls or hanging from The ceiling you're not going to move Them they're fine but if you do plan on Using your lights in a portable sense And taking them with you somewhere and Traveling with them using them on Location somewhere these things are Truly invaluable and that's the really The genius behind this light is the size The battery the performance it makes a Lot of sense and it looks pretty good as Well no wires or cables or bulky Anything hanging off of it it's a Sleek Innovative solution to portable lighting When I'm handling this light it's just Built exceptionally well obviously it's Very lightweight and thin and compact But the battery just the mechanism the

Quick release is amazing clicks just Like that you push a button it releases The battery itself is heavier than the Light down at the bottom you have DC 24 Vault or type c so you can power these Lights using a wide variety of power Sources but I think primarily most People are probably going to be using This little battery because it's so cool And it makes the whole thing just feel Awesome in the hand okay so what are the Shortcomings well there are three things That come to mind and they're kind of Just things that you need to be aware of If you're looking at buying a set of Lights such as these first is the Brightness for 90 to 95 percent of Situations just under 4 000 Lux is going To be more than enough to light a Subject especially if the light is close Enough to your talent but there may be Situations that I'm thinking more Commercial settings where you might want Something more powerful and in those Cases that light will likely need to be Plugged into Power you can certainly Hook up two or three of these these Lights together and multiply the light Output but then you would have two or Three sources of light instead of one The second thing is the battery life Isn't all day long all day strong at Maximum light output that is 100 you get About 30 minutes just over 30 minutes is

What I time now I use these lights on Location and I had them at like 20 Brightness and I have this one at 15 Brightness and I've been recording this Video for like 40 minutes messing up a Whole bunch of times and it's fine so if You use it at 20 you'll probably have an Hour and a half worth of light and the Bad part is when it comes to charging These batteries they take about two and A half hours to charge so it's not like You can charge one while you're using One and depleting one you kind of have To charge it and wait a while before you Can swap it back out and lastly while These lights allow you to use them in Places that you maybe would not think of Using a light outside with no electrical Outlets in sight they are not Weatherproof or waterproof in fact They're really open to the elements so I'd imagine if you had rain that fell Into there after a short while you'd Probably have a lot of problems with These things so you have to be aware of That you can use them outside you can Use them all location but the weather Has to be permitting all in all these Shortcomings don't hide the fact that This light is an impressive piece of Gear I rarely get excited about lights But when I got these and opened them up I was immediately showing them off to my Wife just because of how cool they

Looked Zion calls them quote a perfect Balance between fashion and utility and I couldn't agree more now as far as kits And prices they range from the standard Kit which is 249 dollars U.S to the pro Kit which I think is what I got with all Of these fancy cool accessories and that Will set you back 399 dollars U.S so It's not cheap especially if you're Planning on buying multiple of these it Could really add up pretty quickly Quality is definitely there there I Wouldn't say these are cheap feeling at All they feel very robust and well Thought out and the materials and the Fit and finish everything about it feels Pretty dang solid so if you are Wondering about these lights or Researching them I would say they're Definitely worth checking out I wish They were a little bit cheaper but who Knows Zion may be running some promos Where you can buy one get one or buy one Get one half off or something like that If not they should but I think these are Great options no matter which way you Look at them and maybe the only option For Ultra compact portable Battery-powered lights at the moment Special thank you goes out to Zion for Sending these lights out to me for Review they're awesome I can't wait to Use them for various other projects on This channel

And it's awesome to see Zion who I think Single-handedly revolutionized gimbals The whole environment of gimbals now They're trying to do the same thing with Portable lighting and I think they're Going to be pretty successful with Releases such as this one so let me know Down in the comments what your thoughts Are in regards to This Light would you Use a portable battery-powered light Like this and if so how would you use it What are your thoughts on the overall Design do you like how it looks uh Curious to read your guys's comments Down below Um I think that's gonna be it for this Video as always thank you so much for All of your comments all of your likes And your support stay tuned for more Have a great day bye So these lights are actually more Efficient at lower brightness levels Than I expected so I've been recording This video for about 45 minutes and I'm Still at four little bars you can Probably get away with using these Things for up to two hours would be my Guess I'm not going to do a time lapse To test that but I'm impressed so far It's still at four out of four batteries Even after 45 minutes of providing this Key light that you see on screen
